Oddly enough, I get faster speeds to London than to San Francisco. Yeah, finding out my speed had been raised was a bit of a shock.

How come you didn't post the second test?

It's with the benchmarks of The Incredible Machine (which cost $26,000 by the way).

   :P :P :P

that was good

That is a good Downstream read. Upstream seems a bit sluggish, but still better than what I have had in the past. Posted Image

This is what I came up with using speedtest.net. I'm on Comcast, the most basic service they provide. Looks OK to me.

Yeah, it's fast enough for me too, but SBC/ATT is a pain in the rear when you have to call Customer Support.

I tried the Seattle server:

Lot better than my cousin in Moses Lake, Wa. gets. They don't have high speed out there. I don't even think they have DSL.

That is fairly typical. I usually get in the low 20 MB/s for download and about 1.5 MB/s for upload. I have gotten up to 30 MB/s for download and as slow as 10 MB/s or so.

Yeah, but they likely do not want you running a "server" on the line. :D

I have not read through Comcast's TOS recently, but I believe the technically running a server violates the TOS. I have no clue if that would be enforceable or not.

If anyone from Comcast is reading this, I was just joking about running a server...

Actually, it's used occasionally for game servers and every night a few automated backup programs log in to synchronize their data to it. That only happens between 2:00AM and 5:00AM, so it's not like a busy web server or anything like that. The only time it gets any amount of traffic is when someone who is backing up to it has taken a bunch of pictures or something like that, so I doubt they'd have too big of a problem with it.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/743507798.png This is my fastest using a wired connection with a laptop. My ISP is timewarner cable. Don't get the wrong idea it's not that fast all the time, this was in the middle of the night.

welcome to the forums redcandle =)
time to party! its the weekend \o/

cable is great... when others in the neighborhood aren't using it lol, but that's some pretty fast speed tho =)

im in a bit of irony... my mac computer makes the internet seem faster... webpages visibly load in literally the same amount of time whether on dsl @3meg or fiber @15meg
the only difference is in large file downloads and uploads-- 1-2megabyes a second on the fiber connection

That's some pretty spiffy downstream read. I am getting 19. something and it is pretty consistant, but I am also on Fiber Optic.

I <3 my 12Mbit - downloading entire games on steam in an hour or less is great!

Thank you, Well my modem and wired router are all in the same room right next to each other. I'm thinking of trying how much a difference I get with just my laptop plugged in straight to my modem. Do you think that's worth it, or should I not bother?

It's only been over 30 about three times. That was only my fastest, most of the time I get pretty low speeds when I test. Like I'll get 18 then test again right after that and get 7.

I've seen these speedtest.net things posted on other forums, the fastest I ever saw was 250mb. I'm trying to find it to post it.

i've worked with a 300mbps connection, that is some serious speed, its for an enterprise level datacenter tho...

the speed difference is too small to measure, its on the millisecond or nanosecond scale

if you have high volumes of network traffic at all times of the day & night you would see some slowdown...
but if your network connection is mostly idle, there will be no visible difference

as a term clarification, you have a cable modem and a network switch
usually the term router has potential to trigger the thought to relate it as a wifi router

many times the wired router takes on the role of NAT and DHCP server, and that is when they are referred to as a router - operating at the IP layer. Whereas switches do not do any of that and operate only on the mac address layer.
