Fiber is freedom! I love it! I've gone from webpage starting to load within 3 seconds, to an image heavy webpage loaded within 3 seconds.

@ waldojim, you may just have something faster than me... I'm paying for 30/30 up/down, but finding a speedtest server that can handle my internet speed is hard now. In real world download tests, my DL speed is 4MB per second when downloading ubuntu linux.

This was my best tested speed tonight, and that was to Ontario Canada.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1175795525.png

I am paying for 35/35, but in testing I tend to peak out at 38-40. During my Steam game downloads I was running 5MB/sec- 5.5MB/sec.

edit:
decided to add 3g to my vote on there, as I do tend to use it a lot when I am traveling. The 3g tethering is freaking great.

I wouldn't complain about 20Mbit down. :D

Considering they are digging out after that Earthquake, I guess it should be surprising that there is even a server up and running.

Hey WJ !!

Apparently, from what I could understand from some members on the Rogers Forums,
it's to keep the Torrents uploads in check. It is common knowledge for those that do a
little bit of searching that Rogers also owns a bit (a big Bit) of Universal Studios. So, in
order to get what want as far as downloads are concerned, you also have to accept the
fact that you will be shaped as far as your uploads are concerned. When I took the
Glasnost from MLabs, they reported that my uploads were in fact limited to 85 Kb/s.

http://broadband.mpi...bttest-mlab.php

They just don't come out and say it to your face BUT, like I said, a little Google goes a
long way. SO, I take Full advantage of my Download speed.

I would also say it is potentially somewhat tied to ISPs not really likely residential ISP connections to be running ANY type of server function (including email or web servers or game servers). I would argue that this is why you tend to see most residential ISP connections to have MUCH smaller upload speeds than download speeds.

That would piss me off. I use a considerable amount of my uploads with my orb server so that my family can see pictures of their granddaughter. I also use my orb server to stream music and movies to my phone or laptop when I am on the road (so I don't have to take it with me). Any company trying that crap with me would find themselves fired in a heartbeat.

When I torrent, I intentionally kill my upload to about 20K/sec MAX. Most people don't give two craps about uploading.

Upnp and media servers are becoming more common though. ISPs either need to get with the times, or find themselves extinct. I think people are getting tired of being bullied by companies.

Now you know that this behavior will get you in trouble LOL!

I don't really mind as I was well aware of what I was signing in to. Actually, I should of specified that my Torrents uploads are
shaped to 85 Kb\s. The rest of my uploads are not that bad really.

I make good use of DropBox and FileServe whenever I need to have my family look at pictures or music or movies. They can
either download and keep what they want or in the case of DropBox, just look at them there or listen to what they want to and
decide from there.

But, I agree that for the price I'm paying for their Ultimate line, I should have a Much better upload .

As I said, I knew from the start what I was getting into. Those upload site are not there for nothing and I do tend to take advantage
of what's offered out here.

Well said, WJ. I wholeheartedly agree. For what I do, 3Mbps up is really too slow, but I have no other (faster) options around here. I can't wait until we move out of the stone age!

Hey WJ !!

Quote

When I torrent, I intentionally kill my upload to about 20K/sec MAX.

Now you know that this behavior will get you in trouble LOL!

As I said, I use my upload for other things, I don't want torrents screwing up my uploads. I will leave them running for days, but I refuse to increase the bandwidth.

FLASHORN.

I understand that you make the best of what you have, I just don't understand how these companies think. The internet is going to grow, no matter how much these buttheads try to hold it back. The end result being, they screw themselves.

Upnp and media servers are becoming more common though. ISPs either need to get with the times, or find themselves extinct. I think people are getting tired of being bullied by companies.

True...but many companies just don't really learn except by the "hard way". Just ask the music industry about that. ;)

I don't regularly serve stuff up on my "upload stream", but I do use on occasion for my SlingBox. Comcast has gotten better, but I am still limited to about 2 to 3 Mbps max for uploads when the connection is working well.

Having said that, my connection speeds have been highly variable of late. When I tested my connection earlier (about an hour or so ago), I got about 3 Mbps download. I believe my cable connection is supposed to be at least 6 Mbps if not maybe 8 Mbps. I can frequently get 12+ Mbps. I might have to call Comcast about it.

FWIW, to my knowledge, I have no other better options. My only other option would be DSL, but that would likely be 3 Mbps max.

The bright side here is that wireless (LTE) is improving to a point that the cable companies will soon have REAL competition in nearly every market. They will have to offer something of value to keep customers...
