I had a strange problem crop up. My Windows XP Professional using IE 7 or Firefox cannot load web pages. I can ping pages so I know the DNS is working and I am seen on my local network. I get a 408/409 error. The browser says it has found the page and is waiting, but the page never loads.I can use an ftp client just fine, and IE7 will load secure portions of pages if I use https. I suspect it is a Port 80 issue but do not know how to solve.Ran Adaware and virus scan - no problems.Took down Windows Firewall, no change.

...I thought I might be the only person with that problem. I have the home version of XP and it does the same thing. I have started to have major problems with it shutting my computer down and giving me error messages. I wish Microsoft would fix one thing that would work and stick with it.

Turns out I was unable to fix the the problem even after trying a system restore to an earlier point. I had to do a complete restore from the factory disks. That did solve it, though and I'm back up again with everything operating normally. No idea what caused it.

Anyone figure out what caused this? It seemed to start on my system when I set a Software Restriction Policy under Local Policy Settings, and went away for a while after I hacked Software Restriction Policies out of my Registry, but then it came back...

I tried repairing XP, but that didn't help. Tried Spybot S&D, but it didn't find anything major. Haven't purchased Registry Mechanic, so don't know if that would work on my system. The odd thing is, I can load the http: pages if I VPN into my work network. Doesn't matter if I am on the hard-wired network already, http: is blocked until I VPN in....

I ALSO FOUND OUT SOMETHING THAT I WAS NOT AWARE OF. I AM RUNNING ZONELABS INTERNET SECURITY SUITE AND WAS RUNNING ROOTSWEB ANTI-SPYWARE AS WELL. I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT THE ZONELABS ALREADY HAD AN ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAM IN IT SO I WAS TRYING TO RUN TWO OF THE SAME TYPE OF PROGRAMS AND THAT WAS CAUSING A HEADACHE AS WELL. SOME OF THE INFO OFF OF MICROSOFT'S SITE SAID TO LOWER THE SECURITY SETTINGS TO GET THEM TO LOAD BUT I THINK NOT. GOOD LUCK.8)

The same thing happened to me about 3 days ago, Firefox couldn't load http (port 80) pagesEverything else worked, ftp, vpn, etc..I had Zone Alarm installed at the time, uninstalling it fixed the problem. So if you have this problem and you have zone alarm installed try uninstalling it (note: disabling Zone Alarm dosnt help, you must uninstall it)Hope this helpsNick Tnicholas@organicwealth.com
