I currently learn to use the OpenSource operating system Ubuntu 10.04 x64 and I shall appreciate all the help offered. The OS I appreciate and I've learned the basics for installing programs using the package manager however I now prefer to install a few programs and games which require me to learn to un-tar and make directories. Can you help me get started so I can help fuel the OpenSource effort? I need to learn to install programs without the package manager in Ubuntu 10.04 x64

a lot of it depends on what you are trying to install. Let us know, and we will gladly give you step-by-step instructions.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov
