I used to shop online with www.tigerdirect.com a lot. Good selecton to choose from, real good prices as well, but in Florida you get hit with sales tax, never free shipping, and the rebate process really goes against the buyer unless both persistent and diligent. In other words, once they get money out of you, they try to make sure you don't get it back, even a part of it.

Switched to www.geeks.com after I found some of their great deals in my online searches. No rebate mess, just low prices, no tax, and sometmes they include free shipping as well. Ad I was happy with this arrangement, until this last deal. Oh, I failed to mention that there products are well organized by different categories, makeing it quifk and easy fo find bargains in what you like.

This last deal though, I don't know. Rought and expensive to take, and I am really ticked by the whole thing.

Alright, let's start with some details. Just looking around on their site, I come on what I think is a fantastic buy in an Asus desktop. It's refurbished, but hardware wise it is almost a steal at $399.99. And again, no taxes and free shipping if I buy NOW. So I bought. Be a week getting here, but that is no problem. I can wait.

Only I am 68 now, diabetic, had a brain trauma about a year ago when I fell and it concrete, had to have a pacenmaker installed, and I am having some problems standing and moving. They check, and I have clotted arteries, and they rush me into an operation. That is not something you can prepare yourself for. AFter the heart operarion, I have fluid build up in two emerging sacs below my lungs. Breathing is hard. Have to get around with a walker or wheelchair. Doctor sees the sacs on xray, but wants my body to heal itself. These remain, so he finally goes in with a needle in the back and drains off almost a quart of fluid from the sac on the left side. Doing much better, he tells me my left lungs had been almost colapsed by the pressure. He leaves the right side to heal itself.

This isn,t my case, but I am trying to make you understand that there were serious things going on in my file at the time that ahipment arrived. My wife put it into a storage area.

I was aware of it, but I was not able to do anything about it for quite awhile. And when it comes to computers, I'm "IT" around here But this last Saturday, I finally got up the gumption to drag it out and work to set it up. And I mean I am forced to work from a roll=around chair. Got it set up, apply power, nothing happens. I try several times. Nothing. I work it over to the dining room table, get it up on top, then go fetch my tools and meter. I get the power supply out, check it, and it is fine. Voltages are right on. Ilook at the wiring. seems okay. I put the power supply back in and hook it up, but won't cme on. I finally pop the front cover and look at the power on switch, and the two sides don't meet. There is a piece missing. I push the chassis side with a finger, and it powers up. Now we are talking about a REFURBISHED ASUS PC here, which should have been powered and tested before shipping, and the power on switch is preventing that from happening.

Okay, what time frame are we talking about here? Roughly four months after the time it was ordered. Then it is outside the 90 day warrantee period, right? ell, thatr might sound right to you, but I am sayng that the PC that arrived in that box is not the one specified in the ad, because the ad clearly said REFURBISHED. If had said "Broken, won't power up", I would not have bought it, much less pay $399.99 for it.

So now Computer Geeks, the actual name of the company behind www.geeks.com, is saying this is the PC you ordered, and it is past 90 days, so take your problems to www.asus.com. But I am saying that the PC delivered was not a match for the one in the ad, abd that is your ad, so that is your responsibility. Oh, I did get a call from them during the week, and the fellow admitted that human error could have caused a failed PC to to packaged and shipped. Now that was not my doing, and that cezrtnly was not Asus' doing, and Computer Geeks (CG) iw the only one that knows the reseller and has had dealings with them. That again puts it back on CG.

But, though quite enough, that is not all of it. Last Sunday I also tried to register on www.sus.com to see if I could get any information on this PC, because it arrived in a plain box and not a scrap of paper with it. I would have thought there would have at least been an invoice, but I mean nothing. In trying to deal with www/asus.com, I found the site wanted me to register my PC by serial number, but none of the numbers found on the PC were accepted as a valid serial number. Now this is almost impossible. You build a PC for sale, you shelve it, you sell it, it gets returnd, it goes back for refurbishing, and the serial number is the binding link to all these happenings! There HAS to be a serical number. But there wasn't. The only way I know that you can legitimately do this is to build a PC completely from spare parts, and even then it might not be possible.

So what do I have: It is certainly not refurbished. Doens't even work, and that is as shipped. CG offered me a serial number, which does not appear anywhere on it, so why should Asus accept it back on an RMA without definate proof of what PC it is? Looks like the Manufacturer claim must be false, as who will service it. Why should we expect Asus to service it if we can't even prove that they built it?

I have concluded that the PC shipped to me is a hoax, a fraudulent passing of a cloned Asus model, and I want no part of it. I need that money back so that I can buy a legitimate model, maybe a different brand or from a different seller. Computer Geeks is using every tactic in the book to prevent me from doing this, and I figure it is time to see if someone like On Your Side has more working for them than I do at present.

I moved this to the On Your Side forum, but you might also want to email onyourside@pcworld.com to be on the safe side.

Hi. Been through the clogged artery thing. Got two stents the first time and three the second ( also got shocked three times on the way to the hospital the last time ). What a mess. I bought a Gateway Refurb laptop about a year ago for my mother. I then bought this Gateway desktop as a refurb in November. Both were good deals. Got a $900 to $1000 laptop for $450 and theis desktop was $1250 and I got it for $650. The laptop has done fine. I had to send the first desktop back as it was missing some hardware and wouldn't boot past the Gateway splash screen. I got an RMA from TigerDirect, but they had sold out of the things. I called the supprt number in the ticket. It was to a company called Revonate in Syracuse NY. They told me to cancel the RMA with TigerDirect and agve me another and to ship the thing to them. They would send another one. It was just before Thanksgiving, so didn't receive the replacement until the 3rd of Dec. Got it set up and like you, it wouldn't start although the standby light was on on the Motherboard. I popped the cover to have a look and evrything looked good visually. I had moved some wires in the process. When I plugged the power back in, no standby light. I fugured the PSU had died. I had another 500w PSU in the closet so got it to check. Had switched the CPU connector and was in the process of changing the 24 Pin ATX connector, when I realized that it was loose to the pint of falling out of the socket. I plugged it in snuggly and reconnected the CPU connector that I had switched. When I hit the power it was off to the races. Both refurbs have been very good deals to date.

As for the sales tax with TigerDirect, that is because their offices at least are listed as being on Flagler St. in Miami. To avoid the sales tax, Order from CircuitCity online or possibly CompUsa ( they do have 16 brick & mortar stores somewhere ). TigerDirect, Circuit City online, and CompUsa are all owned by the same company ( SystemMax ) and ship from the same warehouse. The prices are the same as are the deal ( you will find the same deal on all three sites ).

There should be a serial number & model number on there somewhere on a sticker.
