I have a Asus EEE PC 900, and have gotten sick the OS on it, Windows XP. Not only does opening My Documents takes 5sec, My other old computer had that on it also. I have tried installing Ubuntu Netbook, Easy Peasy, EEEbuntu, and now Slitaz, and all of them have failed. I have the BIOS set to Removable Device and OS Installation is on Start. I have followed the instructions to the point from multiple sources, Some even saying how to install ------- on Asus EEE 900. The programs moving the OS onto the USB drive, all but one said "Your Device is now Bootable", or "Finished Successfully". I may be getting on a rant, but right now I am pretty frustrated.
What am I doing wrong??? :(

If you need more info just ask.

Okay.

You have configured your BIOS to boot from your removal device- in this case the USB drive. This makes a little more sense. The "programs" moving the OS onto the USB drive, all but one said "Your Device is now Bootable", or "Finished Successfully". What program are you referring to? Are you using a program provided by your USB drive to install these operating systems?

Yes. The program I used for Ubuntu is called Universal USB Installer, and this is the site Installation Instructions For Easy Peasy I used this UNetBootin For Slitaz I used TazUSB, And so on . . . Easy Peasy is the one that had a error. All of the others said it was successful, or finished.

Does it not let you load it as a live image, or does it not install? Anyway, why not try a different flash drive?

ok, my method is not as 'clean' as using a USB creation tool, but it works, boot up either ubuntu 10 OR Linux Mint 8 Main (I have tested BOTH of these to work on the Lenovo x100e AND the Acer Aspire one). Use the installer to partition out the usb drive like a hard drive use at least an 8gb drive though. So you have a primary 7GB partition and a 1GB swap. install Linux to it as you would any other hard drive, just make sure at the end of the install to tell linux to put the boot loader on the usb drive (typically sdb) and NOT your primary hard drive.

It won't load at the boot up of the netbook. It just loads Windows, as usual. Would a different flash drive fix it? The one i'm using now is a cruzer 2gb, formatted FAT32. I have had problems with the darn U3 on it, but I uninstalled it. It would require me buying another, so i'd like to be sure it would work.

Hmmm. I don't know. I had a similar problem, but it recognized the flash drive. It just wouldn't work. Therefore I'm not sure about the flash drive, but if you can find a cheap 1 gig one, it might be worth it. Is there a command to select boot device on startup?

I have Removable Device as first boot option, but other than that I do not think so. I'll see if I can find a cheap 1GB.

The problem is no more, I was in the wrong menu in the BIOS. I have now booted successfully with DSL, but I don't think i'll keep it.

You might want to try Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It works like a charm for me.

I tend to use Mint on the laptops/netbooks. it seems to fit well, and work quickly while still giving you a complete desktop.

Mint is definitely one of the better linux distros out there. I personally prefer Ubuntu, but Mint is definitely a good option. I'm hoping they come out with a netbook edition. I also can't wait for meego to support my netbook, and Chrome OS is a must try for me.

I booted from USB Ubuntu 10.04 and installed it on my SSD. Windows XP is gone too, I formatted the whole thing. Very happy learner, so far no problems with hardware or peripherals. Haven't had the chance to check out the WIFI at a local coffee shop, so probs might still arise. Can't wait till 10.10!!! :D

Glad everything worked out for you. Just out of curiosity, what version of ubuntu? Is it the regular edition or the netbook edition?

I installed the Desktop version. I installed Jolicloud as a partition a while ago which is basically the same thing, and I didn't like the interface. I don't have a wireless router currently, and it was too centered around the web, as is Ubuntu Netbook. Thanks for the recommendation though.

My Xp could boot up faster then anything else. Which I modified it. I can do it with Windows 7 also, but sometimes.. Get an onslaught of errors on start up...

You would have the same problems with Linux, if you sat there and installed a billion and 3 programs on your system.

Play with Open Solaris... All you need to do is just put it on a ISO/cd...
You do not even have to reformat your hard drive!
The bootable OS, will give you full network ability w/browser function and many features Solaris has to offer. However, many functions of Open Solaris requires you to install the Operating system on a hard disk.

It is free and safe to use. www.opensolaris.com

I would suggest Slackware, Trisquel, gNewSense, Ubuntu, or Fedora.
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
