Greetings,I'm new here and found the site while doing a web search for burning DVDs.My question is how do I convert some of the WMV and Flash video files I have to a format that will play on a regular DVD player hooked to my TV? I have some guitar lessons that I would like to burn to DVD and watch them on the TV in my music room instead of having to be at the computer. Thanks for any help, bperkins

You can use this software TMPgene http://www.tmpgenc.net/ For the WMV files. For FLV files, use the transcoding function of VLC 0.8.6 http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ .

yeokm1, I've downloaded both programs and am currently trying to figure out how to use the transcoding function of VLC 0.8.6. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've already used the TMPgene program to convert one WMV file I just have to have a chance to burn it to DVD and test the output and resolution on the TV. I've tried to use the Help function to find out how to convert the FLVs but I can't seem to navigate the program. Do you have any tips to get me started? Thanks

In VLC, click file, wizard.Select transcode/save to file. NextYou will be asked to select an input stream. Click the Choose button. A window will appear with the file tab selected. Click the browse button and select the FLV file. Click OK, Next.Check the transcode video checkbox, select MPEG-1 video under codec, leave the bitrate at 1024. Select transcode audio, leave it as MPEG audio. Leave the bitrate at 192. NextEncapsulation format, select MPEG-1.Define a location to save the file. Let the lenghty process complete. After that use TNPgenec convert the MPEG-1 file to a DVD compatible MPEG-2 file.

Use Augart Video Convertor, as for me, I convert flv files from youtube.com into DVD video with it only, moreover, I burn them on discs. Furthermore, it converts WMV, AVI & lots of other formats. This program converts into DVD video very simple & burns discs. I watch them at home on my TV & everything is OK. I recomend it :D_

I use Augart to convert video files as well :) It converts WMV and Flash video files simple & very fast .It's much more convenient than use different programs for different formats & especially convenient than convert into MPEG...first. You just add any video file to AugartVC & choose anything you'd like to do with this clip, e.g. burn on a disc. I, personally, convert clips for my Apple iPod. This is the best program for conversion video, I know. It has a lot of abilities in conversion except iPod: it works for PSP, Archos, Creative...So, I advise you use Augart Video Converter for any popular video formats.

yeokm1, I've done the first step to convert the .flv to mpeg-1, I forgot to ask what file extension I need to use when I save the file after each conversion. What do I need to do to use the TNPgenec to convert the MPEG-1 file to the DVD compatible MPEG-2?? Sorry to ask so many stupid questions but I've never tried something like this before and I want to make sure I get it right. Again thanks for your help.Shendry, is the Augart program free? I tried to click on your link but got a "Site not Found" error. Guess I'll try a search to see if I can find it. Thanks for the tip on Augart!!

Use the extension .mpg In Tmpgenc project wizard, select DVD-NTSC, 16:9 or not is your choice, nextBrowse for your .mpg video file. Click next for the subsequent windows and define where to save the MPEG-2 file.

yeokm1, thank you for the help. In an earlier post you said the conversion was a lengthy process, however when I do a conversion it only takes about 15 seconds to complete and comes up as 'file name.mpg,access=file}. This can't be right. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I used the steps you gave me and when I tried to use TNPgenec to convert the file to MPEG-2 I get a message that says something about not being able to open the file, format not recognized. Now again this may be a dumb question but, the software I'm using for burning DVDs is one I've never used before. Are you familiar with Nero? I wanted to try burning a DVD of one of the files I converted and thought it would be under "Burn Video files" but when I try to burn the new mpg file to the disc the software says the file is not recognized as a video file format. Once I get the file converted to mpg can I just burn a data DVD and have it play on the DVD player?I've never tried to burn DVDs on the computer so this is something I have alot of questions on.Thanks for your help, you've been a great help and I really appreciate it.

You are welcome.[quote:bd16612543]15 seconds to complete and comes up as 'file name.mpg,access=file}.[/quote:bd16612543]This seems very strange to me. I have never encountered this problem. What is the length of the video file? You cannot burn a disc as a data disc and expect it to work on a DVD player. The only exception is for Divx files. The burn Video files option you chose is correct. However as to why Nero cannot read the format, I do not know the answer. Nero should be able to read MPEG-1 and 2 files.Trial and error and good luck.

yeokm1, the file starts about 31.7MB and after being converted to mpeg1 the file size is 118.8MB.I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling VLC, but still get the same results, the conversion completes after about 15 seconds and the file is shown as 'file name.mpg,access=file}. I'll try to convert it from mpeg1 to mpeg2 but I don't think it will work since these are the same results as before. If you think of anything that I could be doing wrong please let me know. Thanks again.

Can't think of anything that could be wrong. The length of the file is in terms of time, the information you gave me is the file size.
