If ya want to make FF fast just make it in a true language instead of that slow xul. Why it will never be as faster as the other browsers. But of course also why FF's extension system can't be beat, I know. Oh well. lol

How fast does a browser need to be? FF may not be the fastest, but it is fast enough for the average user. A few milliseconds difference in one browser over another doesn't matter much. I like FF because it is by far the most customizable browser available. There are hundreds of plug-ins and add-ons you can install. I have used Chrome and Safari and like them just fine, but always come back to FF.

 I use Opera. It takes awhile to load on a cold run, but after it's warm it's instantaneous. So, I may be alone here, but a cold start for me doesn't indicate crap about the browser's speed...I care more about the features and the speed of the browser itself, not how quickly it starts up. And regarding to using illusion to make it seem faster, to me that almost seems like a lazy way out.
