Hi, Michael, and welcome to the forum.
What applications do you want to automate? They may come with their own automation tools.

I used to use a boilerplate add-in with Firefox, but I switched to Chrome last year when I switched to Windows 7, and I don't remember the name of the add-in I was using. (Boilerplate, for anyone unfamiliar with the term, is effectively the same as text-entry macros. You can create text strings that you can insert anywhere you want to.)

this is probably the most capable application for monitoring and automation currently available:
http://iks-automation.com/
it's completely web-based, adapts itself to the screen and form factor of the access device, is reliable and stable, supports a wide range of switching and sensing units, and makes it easy to set up user profiles and automation scenarios

It sounds like you are mostly looking to automate local tasks (meaning, programs on your PC)
For this I would suggest WinAutomation as your best bet right now.
You can read a review on it and some other top Automation Software at Automation-Software.org

Macro Scheduler is the automation tool for most of the home users, larger and small businesses. To maintain automatically local backups regularly for your personal data use Automatic Backup Pro software.

BASH and the suite of GNU tools that ship with most POSIX compliant operating systems, such as Linux, UNIX, OS X, etc.
My favorite, anyway.
Totally free, heavily documented, and have been in active use and actively supported for decades.
