Hiya Famous16, welcome to PCW forums :)

To get the most accurate help, you need to be as detailed as possible-
What/how many computer(s)? what version of windows/mac/linux? what kind of network? what programs involved?

If you're running windows on a TCP/IP network, just look up the MAC address on the computer in question using the command ipconfig /all (in command prompt)

@your quote- how a hardware device discovers the MAC address of another in the event that it is unknown?

What hardware device? What program is reporting MAC unknown?

Have you tried wireshark for a packet/MAC address tracing?

If you have something different in computers/network, see detail references at the top.
