I had it happen at least 12 times and one of the times I even managed to put the call on hold by apparently pressing and holding the mute button for a few seconds with my face (guess that is some good that came out if this, I had no Idea how to hold the call before that happened.)

Oh and coming from an iPhone 4 and previous Android phone owner i've never had any of the problems you mentioned above with the iPhone 4. Yellow spots? Screen Flashing? How about hold the phone closer to your face. After using Apple's iPhone and Apple's iOS 4 going back to phones like the android seems so... primitave. I find using an iPhone the most natural and easy mobile phone experience ever. I'm not a closed minded "Apple Fanboy" i've tried many phones ranging from the HTC EVO and other android and windows mobile powered phones. I don't find any of these phones easier too use or more effecient than an iPhone.
A little about me:
I am a software programmer, my favorite language being Java. I work on both Windows, Linux and Mac environments. I've used Windows mobile powered smart phones and switched to the Google G1 Android Smartphone. After which I tried my friends HTC EVO 4G for two weeks and finally decided to try out one of my other buddies iPhone 3G. After trying that for a week I couldn't ever go back. Everything on the iPhone was so easy and well engineered. This brought me to my final desicion of purchasing an iPhone 4. And about a week after purchasing it i'm happy as can be with my desicion.
I'm hoping my honest and educated opinion will encourage others who are open minded to try Apple's truely revolutionary smartphone.
Cheers

This is a true flaw in the phone. I just hope apple stands by their product and fixes these things. If not I will have to return it and go backk to my 3GS until next years latest and greatest iPhone chalking this one up to a gigantic screw up on apples part.

After jumping through umpteen hoops with ATT to upgrade, and dealing with the delays, and selling my beloved 3GS, to now have this "superior" phone with all these obviously ill-conceived, never user-tested, flaws... it's is just the icing on my apple basing rant to anyone and everyone who cares to listen, or would prefer not to listen.
I am sure that Apple tried to get ahead of the curve on this, but with the pressure to sell, sell, sell short-stroked the HELL out of this model.
By what I am seeing, and hearing, it is obvious that our design team never had the time to thoroughly vet the design phase. I feel for you guys.
The onus is on the suits upstairs who would rather push this abortion through the cash register and sort it out later, than come out with a solid unit. It was a nice start, industrial design-wise. But the bean-counter (as usual) made the crucial design decisions. I have been involved is SO many projects that get cluster-f-d because of the suits, it not even funny.
I know the design team wishes they had more time to have vetted the very things we are seeing FAIL. I feel for you. But the bottom line is, this type of failure is not your fault. It is the ineptitude of those idiots "in charge".

It always amazes me how Apple Fanbois have to give you their resume to justify their "technical" background -- but I would have to say the being a Java programmer hardly qualifies one to be a mobile telephone expert. Last time I checked, you didn't have to program a smart phone in order to use one.
But your timelines do suffer a bit -- the HTC EVO 4 was launched on June 4, 2010 and your friend let you use if for 2 weeks? Great friend -- didn' he want to use his apparently brand new phone? And then you switched to a 3 year old iPhone 3G -- wow, why do I smell the lingering scent of cow manure?
So either you are the most incompetent telephone user on the planet who thinks a 3 year old incredibly slow iPhone 3G compares to an amazing piece of technology like the EVO 4, or you are a liar.
Personally based on the stench of your post, I'd say it's the latter...

And the operative word being "Apple's". In the real world, personal bests mean nothing.
Another black mark for Apple's "superior" quality department.
P.S.
Cool story bro.

I've met many an idiot that can program Java. Proclaiming the sales of a device that people couldn't get their hands on to experience before they bought it is just folly.
NB: primitive; when using 'both' you should highlight 2 things, not 3. Buddy's. Decision. Try not to put 'And' as the start of a sentence. Truly.
It's as bad as apple espousing their divinity when someone like yourself comes on claiming your intelligent and need to be trusted.

Ross, if you're going to be a grammar [censored], your grammar should be immaculate.
1. "your intelligent" should be "you're intelligent"
2. "need" should be "needs"
The original, criticized poster misspelled "efficient" also and "too use" should be "to use"
There, I'm done for now, that was fun.

iSheep are genius'.
Now I want to be a bit fair as I always try to be. I am present using the HTC Incredible. It also has this sensor. When I place it to my face it does make the screen go black and as you move it away it lights up again. I thought there was a small hole near the mic that may have had a light sensor to make it go off. But then that wouldn't work in a dark room. Right? But what I did notice is this. When people talk they have a habit of gesturing when talking. Sometimes they use the hand with the phone it it. Could the sudden movement be set to be to sensitive to movement that it cause the screen to turn back on?
