By the time Vista comes out nobody will want to get it because all their friends had purchased Vista and got locked out of their system because Microsoft claimed that they had an illegal copy of Vista.

I have to believe that the hackers out there in the world are better programmers that the motley bunch at Microsoft. They can't write good code to begin with, how are they gonna write code to protect it?

They can't write good code to begin with, how are they gonna write code to protect it?Haha. What they'll do is release a patch that'll include 30 different security updates to protect your computer from hackers then put in a little memo program like the Windows genuine advantage tool that will basically give you a pop up window every 30 seconds stating "Please don't pirate our software, and to ensure this doesn't happen again, call our 1-800 number now to report your illegal actions to a Microsoft representative" if your pirating the software.

If you're gonna be talking about how good Linux is and how dumb Windows is, please don't visit PCWorld. Go and play around in some linux site. People going LINUX LINUX are starting to annoy me thank-you-very-much.

I think I have an unhealthy reaction to this, the more I here about this validation and activation crap the more it pisses me of. "The pirating of Windows has been a perennial problem for Microsoft, particularly in developing countries. " they are abosultely right, not everyone can just pop over to curcuit city and spend 200+ on an OS. I don't like this kindoff OS punishment that microsoft is building in thier computers, like if you don't activate properly and we will restrict you like you're and 11 year old child who said a bad word. As I keep saying and computer is a tool, I'm supposed to make the commands here, I don't want it pestering me to activate and restart it self and restrict me from doing what I want just becuase it doesn't agree with how I use it, or the kind of software or the legitimacy of it, It's not your bloody business, STAY OUT OF MY LIFE and just work Dammit! I don't want it to talk to me and annoy me with a annoying pops to remind me of bloody updates, or whatever else. My tv works fine, my PSP works fine, and my phone works fine because it bloody does what I want it to do. So screw of Microsoft with your lame machinations, your OS isn't that damn good anyway. If you were so determined and serious about improving certian other aspects of you OS as you were with pissing people off with this Validation and activation crap, maybe you wouldn't be sued so bloody much.

Let me first introduce myself, my name is Everett and I am a Microsoft Man. Don't get me wrong, I like the Penguin and the Blue Apple, but I've know Windows for far longer. Yes, Windows applications have their share of flaws, but so do Apple and Linux. Even the companies as a whole have their own troubles.Microsoft seems to have the most, but that's only because people like to single them out. I hardly hear people speak about their problems with Mac and Linux, but then again... I don't see that many people using them. I believe Windows owns 90% of the OS market as of recently. Mogofod, if Microsofts OSes suck so much... then why do people in China and other developing nations want them so bad? Why are 90% of computer users still using their crappy Windows products? They could easily obtain a free copy of Linux, and why are you so scared of WGA? I bet youre on a pirated copy now, heck most of your computer is probably filled with pirated software.I actually feel sorry for Microsoft Security Software Specialists. Yeah, hackers & crackers provide them with constant jobs, which keep their pockets filled and their families fed, but their families still suffer. "No Sally, Dad can't be home for Christmas, he has to keep the bad guys out of the companies cookie jar and protect their wellbeing." I bet you half the hackers that target Windows products have no lives or if they do, neglect their families something awful.I'm personally not entirely happy with WGA (it could be better), but if it helps mama and papa be home for Christmas so be it. That's my two cents!P.S. This is PC World, not Bash Microsoft Land or Linux Rulez Planet.

I personally applaud Microsoft's move to protect its product. First, it is illegal and second it reduces the producer's revenue that could hurt innovation. Why does PC World not condemn such actions. Honesty is always the best policy. Disturbed at the brashness of those that steal.

I read the article too about the fact that 83 percent of the people in china have a pirated copy of windows Everett. And to be honest, yes,I have the run off version of windows, but I like alot of people who use microsoft were first victims of piracy before we became pirates ourselves, my parents bought me this computer, with a set for my sister. People buy there computer with the micrsoft OS automatically on it, it is what they are use to, so they use what they get. I don't agree with piracy, hey it's wrong to steal someones product, but! Bullying people into buying your product is something different. Microsoft knows they have 90 percent of the market. They know every one has there OS so why do this? you're making the most money. This overzealous and strict restriction on there software is nothing short of punishment, and they do not have the right to do this. You have no right to restrict people from there own machinery. You just freaking Don't. And exactly how does WGA stop hackers?Eh? How? It's anti piracy, not anti hacker? that means it target people who bought little cheap built computers....like myself. It targets my twelve year old sisters who is completely ignorant of all this stuff and just want to check her email and IM..... does that sound like a software were pirate to you?Nope, I think it's time for microsoft to scratch that Idea and come up with a new one.And contrary to what you say, I'm a huge open source fan, from Opera to AVG free. So naturally every peice of software on my computer is open source, and not pirated.

So naturally every peice of software on my computer is open source, and not pirated. There is no way to stop hackers, I hate the malicious bastards. Everybody knows of M$ monopolistic ways, and the only way we can ever expect change is if the vast majority of computer users, particularly Windows users, get smart and try to learn a little more about the devices they use for checking email and browsing the net. These people are at least 80% or more of Windows users, and this 80% usually doesn't complain that much because all they really do is log in and open IE and/or Firefox (I personally like IE7 better than Firefox 2). The 20% or so of us who actually know a bit more than how to log in and/or double click on this or that are the minority, so we can raise our voices to the high heavens and Microsoft probably won't so much as return a peep.I liked the Movie Pirates of Silicon Valley. It opened my eyes to how Microsoft was able to dominate and keep itself a float even in light of the ridicule it faces today.I know Microsoft is not #1 to many people, including me, but then again... they dominate the market, so we all might as well get used to it... Well, at least until 40% of that 80% become a bit more educated in the way of the samurai... I mean techno geek.P.S. My copy of XP only crashed once while typing this

u know i am using windows vista right now and i get the important updates from microsoft soo easly, microsoft can't stop the pirates cause people need them to crack windows cause the price of it is too high,i am from egypt and windows vista basic here is about 159$ that means in eg pounds 906 L.E. ...we have workers who takes 250L.E. per month...how r they gonna get it , and the pirated copy of windows xp worth about 20 L.E.,not 500 L.E. (the genuine one)...so we need pirates here and in china P.S. : i am working on a pirated copy of windows vista ultimate and it is smooth and easy...so no problem at all.

I don't see the whole big deal with Vista. Yes I know that it has a whole deal of new features but XP still gets the job done. Unless you are a pc freak and want to stay up to the latest trend then go ahead. I am not saying that I am not going to get Vista, but people make too much deal out of it.

I totally agree with you Mert, Vista does get too much hype, but its still worth the buy, just not right away. As I have been told and probably most of you have been too, wait at least until the first Service Pack before you seriously consider upgrading your PC and/or buying a brand new PC with Vista preinstalled. That's my extra penny worth of advice.

As for hackers, be glad we're out here cause we basically find flaws for software and systems that companies need to fix and keep ppl employed. So Vista ROCK ON, never gonna buy you but i will install it on my old desktop just to ge ta view of ya!!!!!!
