I've been using truecrypt for ages. learn how to use the hidden volume tool, and you have an ultra safe encrypted data store.

Windows Encryption File System will do the same thing with NTFS at the folder of file level. XP will only format a flash drive with FATS, but Vista and 7 will format a flash drive with NTFS.

I have used TC for years. One of the nicest things about it is that it is FAST. I can not notice any delay when working with files (or copying files) from the encrypted drive.
I carry a back up of all my important files with my on a USB drive - and keep it encrypted with TC. I also keep the TC software on the USB drive.

1. How long would an expert take to decrypt the file?
2. What kind of encryption is used (i.e., 128 bit, 256 bit, public/private keys??)?
3. How many characters maximum and what characters are allowed in the PW?

You may also want to look into Diskcryptor.net for a free open source alternative to Truecrypt.

You dont need to waste a CD-Rom with Diskcryptor, like you have to do with TC.

An even simpler (and free) program, if all you want to encrypt is text, is Steganos Locknote. You run Locknote, paste in your text, give it a password and a new file name, and it creates an encrypted (AES 256 bit), stand alone, executable file which can be copied, emailed, whatever.

I have three or four portable external hard drives (Western Digital passport size) on which I have some sensitive and personal data stored. Can I use TrueCrypt to establish security for those drives? I need to password protect each of them.

I downloaded TrueCrypt and went through all the instructions. I tried to load files onto the USB drive I bought. The interface is just too complicated. A mass of buttons with "Mount," "Dismount," and a whole bunch of mumbo-jumbo. I'm no idiot, but the instructions are about as straightforward as an anaconda. I finally said the heck with it and removed the program. I understand encryption software should be difficult for SOMEONE ELSE to hack, but it should not be so convuluted for the USER. TrueCrypt: Simplify, simplify!

I understand what you're saying.
When I first started learning about TrueCrypt, I had a similar reaction. Many options. Confusing.
It was months before I realized that the encrypted FILE approach, was a much better option for me, than the encrypted PARTITION approach.
But it is most definitely worth the learning curve. Without question.
Now, all I do, is double-click my securefile.tc, ALT-M, password, enter, Done.
So simple.
