Hi all

I am a total noob at this so forgive me if I end up asking rudimentary questions. I have an old tower PC which was pretty good a couple of years ago relative to its time with a video card that has DVI output. I connected it to my 1080p TV (46 inch toshiba regza) through an DVI to HDMi cable. WHen I did, I noticed the computer ran extremely slow, as in it would take me 30-60 seconds to open firefox. I had no problem streaming videos off the net with no slowdown, however.

I thought maybe my computer had gotten slow, but when I connected it to a 24.5 inch LG monitor through a DVI to DVI cable, it ran completely fine.

Why is it when I connect it to my bigger HDTV that it runs slow?

Hi and welcome to the forums. It could be the DVI to HDMI transition, but this is just a guess on my part. You didn't list your Computer Specs which would have been helpful I have a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV. I do not have an HDMI port on the present Video card, but would get one with the HDMI Output before running it to the TV. Seems to be the best way to go. Depending on the Power Supply you have in there, it should be fine, but my require a PSU upgrade for a card with HDMI output.

Coastie you are so right! I just changed the cable and went dvi-dvi with a DVI to hdmi converter. I also changed resolution to 720 which made things run smoothly. Thanks for the inspiration!!! My last question is this:

If I am having no problem outputting to a 1080p 46 inch LCD TV, will I have problems outputing to a 32 inch TV that is an LED?

It doesn't have anything to do with the size of the TV. The performance is going to be influenced by the resolution that the panel is set to (what the video card is sending to it), so 720p is going to be 720p no matter what size TV it is. The best way to increase the performance to play 1080p smoothly is to buy a new video card that supports hardware decoding of h.264 and mpeg 2 video codec types. But don't waste your time swapping the video card if the CPU isn't even a dual core or is too old and outdated. But I have a PC with a 2.5 gHz Core 2 Duo and nice Nvidia video card that supports h.264 / Mpeg 2 hardware decode and it plays 1080p content on a 55" Samsung LED TV smooth as glass. If your video card doesn't support hardware (on-board) decoding then smooth playback is very difficult, since it then relies a great deal on the performance of your CPU, memory, motherboard, etc. and even so, then your CPU utilization runs very high, since it is handling all of the decoding / de-interlacing of the video.
