Hello. Can anyone recommend a free, good Distro for Linux? I have tried Ubuntu and Fedora Core 6, but I am interested in what else is out there. Thanks for the help

It depends on your choices and budget. Are you willing to pay for a packaged distribution or download a large free one?For free ones, FC6 and Ubuntu are quite common. There is one distro called Xandros Open Circulation v3.02. This distro contains many features such as MP3 playback which are not available from others. Download this using bitorrent. The official website requires you to pay for it.For paid ones, use Mandrake or Suse Linux. This two distros come with many features and instruction books useful for novices. For bootable live-cds, turn to Knoppix or Puppy Linux.

Ubuntu - along with most others now - have a live CD on their installation CD.The name may sound intimidating, but Scientific Linux is also a great OS. It has my vote of confidence, even above Ubuntu, SUSE (the paid version) openSUSE (the free version) or Mandrake (or Mandriva). If they have a boxed for sale version, I don't know of it; so far as I know it's download only. If there is a drawback to it, it would be that there is less system specific support forums than many of the others.Try going over to distrowatch.org. They have a list of how many of each disto were downloaded and one can often gauge a distro's ease of use by it's popularity

Look at THIS site for Linux Distro's http://distrowatch.com/The BEST live ones are PCLOS--Bigdaddy, MEPIS, KNOPPIX--or MINTThe best all around one is PCLOS--run it live--if you have a gig of Ram or more run it in ram-- Easy install on Hard disk also. Easiest distro for a windows user trying Linux for 1st time. Will be coming out with an updated version very soon--couple weeks--Freespire is ALSO an EASY disto for new users as is MEPIS.Of them all PCLOS and MEPIS are the best.

Take a look at Mint. The latest version is Bea. It's 98% Ubuntu DNA, but they tried to make it easier on the new user. Mint seems to do a better job than Ubuntu of discovering and mounting Windows partitions. It recognizes more wireless devices (no guarantees on that one, but it's better). Mint includes lots of the multi-media apps that people end up installing anyways. And it's blue. Some folks just can't stand the Ubuntu earthy colors

http://lt.k1011.nutime.de/Look for the "Download" link across the top of the page. Mint doesn't have a lot of servers. Might have to wait until night time. Bea is the latest version
