With multiple manufacturers constantly building hardware handsets that are compatible with Android, it's clear that Anrdoid will have more than 5x more choices than the iPhone year by year.

For example, the only thing Apple could improve upon for the iPhone 4 was just it's external color..from black to white? Give me a break! How about releasing the white model with a 1.5 GHz or 2 GHz processor instead? That's wishful thinking.

Nevertheless, this is driving competition within the Android ecosystem to continue to push and release the best hardware smartphones technology can offer. Motorola for example, already plans to unveil a Droid smartphone running an astonishing 2 GHz processor later this year. Other Android handset manufacturers will follow the new lead and leaving iPhone hardware behind.

Not only is this good for consumers and developers, it's also very effective. Android is now the market leader and now commands 34% of market share leaving iPhone in history with just 21%.

I'm now tempted to join the crowd in buying an Android smartphone myself. With added benefits in looking to build apps for the Android ecosystem.

I think I read somewhere that Android outsold iPhones in the 20 or so days after the iPhone 4 launch. If so I don't see iPhone outselling android Anytime soon unless iPhone 5 comes out winter.

Iphone RIP. The last four handsets that I bought are Android based. Would never go back to an iPhone. Today one I'd my most fanatic Apple fan had a chance to try swype, he was amazed on how far ahead Android is. We retired DLNA with a wireless keyboard, using thinkfree, he then came to realize the huge gap between a game phone (iPhone) and a miniature laptop (Android cellphone) he now has doubts about buying a 4g, specially when the average download speed on 3g 4.4 mbps he saw today was faster then his wifi 3mbps. Android is the future.

Apple really needs to step up it's game. The problem is, Apple is just one company. HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, they all make Android devices. And they pump a new one out every three months. So, one phone from each manufactor every three months, as compared to Apple's one phone every one year. Doing the simple math, that's sixteen phones a year for Android. Meaning it's sixteen against one.

Unless Apple begins stepping up its game and either making truly innovative things or releasing a new iPhone every quarter, the iPhone will go the way of the Mac.

This is Mac vs Windows all over again... Windows had different manufacturers like IBM, HP, Dell, etc. and quickly buried Mac, despite Apple's brilliant marketing.

I was an iPhone customer, a blackberry customer and Windows Mobile customer as well. I've even owned the Palm Treo. I recently switched from the iPhone to the HTC EVO. It was a pure culture shock at first. I truly didn't see what the fuss over Android was in the first few hours of my new ownership. Three days later I not only didn't want my iPhone, I also put up my two iPads for auction on ebay.

Just an opinion from an ex-iPhone user here. I'd be willing to bet the reasons for current iPhone users sticking with the platform is for the pure beauty of it. The software does look incredible. It's polished, even swanky. The other reason is that Android is so different. It's not something you can just try for 10 minutes and then decide its worth. The iPhone is feature-less and so it is pretty easy to see what it offers. The Android has much more customization to it. What you see at the store might not appeal to you, and it's important to understand that what you see is not all there is. The interface, its behavior, look and feel and even behavior are all customizable.

The iPhone doesn't have Scenes, for example. The iPhone doesn't have widgets either. You can't throw a single setting on your desktop as an icon as you can with Android. I can create multiple scenes and switch between them. During the day, I could have email and agenda widgets for easy access to business information. Come 5:00PM, I can switch the phone to be more socially themed. I can mix this or have none of it. It's entirely up to me how the phone presents' information. Essentially, I can make the phone my own. With the iPhone, you're getting Apple's vision of what a phone should be. With the Android, you realize your own vision.

I don't see how I could use anything other than an Android at this point. And luckily I have my choice of styles and carriers, unlike the iPhone.

What no fanboys chiming in with their childish remarks? Maybe they're finally just speechless as reality sets in and they start to wonder if MAYBE there are some smartphones better than their iJobs.

Thsi week I'm celebrating the 1st anniversary of my escape from iPrison where I served 2 years, suffered through 4 overheating, blackout screening, call-dropping but "pretty" Apples.

I was happy when i got my hands on a myTouch3G on 8/5/09. I was happier when I rooted it and installed a couple of free updated ROMS. Then Nexus one came into my life and since then I'm now addicted to the constant stream of new ROMS that Cyanogen and his merry men cook up each week. According to speedtest.net I'm already getting upload & download on Tmobile that is faster than some EVO 4G users and I didn't have to spend a penny. Now I'm counting the minutes until HTC releases an HSPA 4.3" phone for Tmobile and at that point I'll likely stop dragging my Netbook on trips.

Android life is VERY good and it deserves to be top dog.

This is such useless information. As if anyone cares about some popularity contest. I mean, I use and LOVE Mac OS X which only has 5 or so percent of the market. Do I care? Why in the world would I care that the overwhelming majority of the world uses WinBlows??!! I prefer Mac, so I use Mac... you go right ahead and use Winblows.. I don't care WHAT you prefer!

Same thing with this hopelessly idiotic Android vs iPhone debate. I don't care that Android is outselling iPhone. First of all, Android is not a PHONE! It is an operating system that several different manufacturers have chosen to use as the firmware for their devices. When that is the case (and especially when companies are basically GIVING AWAY Android devices), OF COURSE that platform will "win" the numbers game. But again: Who cares? DELL will sell MANY MORE laptops than Apple will sell macbooks but I'd take one of those popularity-contest-losing macbooks ANY DAY over a DELL. Or HP. Or Acer or ANYTHING! It's called a personal preference! Deal with it!

Personally, I think Android phones are ugly, the UI sucks and it really does feel more like a laptop than a cell phone.. Well? I ALREADY HAVE A LAPTOP!! I want a PHONE! A phone that is easy to use, plays all my music, lets me read the news comfortably and check email. The iPhone does that... and does it well... and does it beautifully... and that's all I and MILLIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE care about.

If you wanna spend all day customizing your phone and treating it like a 4.0 inch screen laptop, then DO IT! I personally think you look ridiculous... but it's YOUR PREFERENCE! And that's fine :-)

But this stupid bragging about "my Android phone can do this but your iPhone can't!!" does NOTHING but show the utter childishness of Fandroids, who have, without questions, replaced Apple fanbois as the most annoying gadget-lovers on the planet.

In summary: I'll continue to enjoy my beautiful and elegant iPhone regardless of how popular it is... and you fandroids go right ahead and enjoy all your advanced customization.... and enjoy sending all your personal information to random websites in China :D

Is the exact rationale that iPhone lovers used to use in order to bash the first gen Android powered hand sets. Now that the shoe is on the other foot things look a bit different huh?

@ TechWatcher2010

Remember, its just a phone. But your right about personal preference.

Android is all about customization and functionality. The iPhone embodies form over function. People who value aesthetics over functionality will never buy and Android phone, Google probably assumed that when designing Android.

Which is why Android is designed for functionality, customization, and productivity first, then aesthetics last.

Of course people like yourself, who may be intimidated by customization, or too simple minded to require any advanced functionality find the iPhone right within their comfort zone.

However after looking at these sales figures, it seems most of the world is not like you, and prefers functionality over aesthetics, or a phone that just makes reliable phone calls.

And that's the good part, CHOICE.If you want to go cheap, you go with windows PC, If you have money to burn, you go with Mac, same thing with clothes, cheap = Wal-Mart,quality and expensive = Prada, Louie Vuitton, Dior, as for me I want to wear, use something everybody else is not using.

I think this cartoon gives us all good perspective. We buy and buy, of course all the companies keep making them, and keep us all in competition for what's new:

Geeks like Android.

The average consumer isn't customizing their Android OS phone to allow them to time travel and eat Doritos at the same time.

Average consumer with an Android is just getting their personal data sent to China.

So, yes, Windows all over again.

Well, I am a college professor who enjoys web development and app development in Objective C as a hobby. But yes, I'm oh so simple-minded... and I'm so intimidated by Android letting me download animated wallpaper... How could I ever live with such advanced functionality??? It's too scary!! You are welcome to go around calling everyone who doesn't use Android "simple-minded" but it just makes you look every bit as arrogant as any iPhone owner. Which is true, of course, and provides further evidence that you Fandroids have truly replaced the fanboys as the most arrogant, annoying gadget-lovers on the planet.

I joined the smartphone revolution late, so, I have no idea what iPhone owners were saying early on. However, based on my experience with fanboys, I can only imagine that this is correct. I'm not happy with arrogant Apple lovers anymore than I am with arrogant Android lovers. It's all embarrassing childishness that is inappropriate for adults involved in IT... regardless of what side it comes from.

Are you sure you don't care? Because you sound very angry/agitated.

There's a reason these devices sell better. Scratch that, there's many reasons. Open platform, better specs, more customization, the list goes on. Hard for Apple fans to believe that people actually want to control what their hardware and software does, I know.

Funny how the tables have turned, huh? Isn't that exactly what iPhone's slogan was saying about iPhone? That it can do anything and everything? Come to think of it, I haven't heard Apple's slogan of "There's an app for that" in awhile. That's probably because they're worried that Android will make commercials saying "There's 5 better apps for that".

That simply is not possible...as you just proved with your 6 poorly written paragraphs. There's an iJob's fan for you.
