Just buy a Core Solo, they are just Core Duos that wouldn't work right or weren't built right.

obe, you can't turn off the one of the cores, but you can do stuff like set up a device profile where you can disable some devices like your optical drive, or adjust the brightness of the screen and disconnecting usb devices

Guys gezz, you can do it in bios if its provided (my dell's even can set the processors up that way). Or just disable a single processors driver. Even setting the affinity through crtl alt del for the processes can save power by unchecking cpu 1 for every process if you want a real time waster. It can be done and its not dangerous in the least.
