Hi paganwannbe,

It almost sounds like you have a second pc, I do hear that you have a second drive.

If you have a second pc, slave the HDD that you want the pictures from.
I will assume it won't freeze as a slave being it won't load everything like it was the main drive with the OS.
This is easy with all IDE HDDs, not sure if a sata HDD with an OS will not allow an IDE added HDD with an OS be a slave only. ??

I don't see why you can't do what you are thinking if your second HDD is IDE.
Master it with lynux and slave your current drive.

I will assume from your previous post you understand the jumper and ribbon configuration already.

To be honest I have never used linux and xp at the same time.
But if two HDDs are mastered and slaved, the slave will be just that.
IDE is easy with the jumpers and master will also be at the end of the ribbon.

The xp won't load as slave but You can access your pictures and docs.

If all you are trying to get Linux to do is back up your pictures, there really is no need to install it. Grab a live CD, like Ubuntu, or Damn Small Linux and then just copy off what you need.

I would be concerned as to what is causing your instability though, first go into your bios and try to underclock your CPU a bit (by dropping the front side bus to a lower value) this will also slow down your ram. With any luck, that will reduce the chance for heat problems, and make this a bit easier for you.

take my 1.1ghz down to just about 733mhz should be good right and for whats causing the instability I'm not sure I would start talking about but that would move us to the windows part of the forum

that would be more than enough for now. But if that does make it stable, then at some point you need to find out what is going on. On older systems, it could be unclean power, insufficient power, heat, and so on. It will take time to narrow down the exact issue, but getting your backup comes first.

Hey Pagan, I'm curous to know how much FREE space you have left on that Hard Drive. Once you get below 50%, you will start having all kinds of problems as the free space diminishes ( is used up ). Also, I would definitely recommend updating to the latest Service Pack.
