A 10ft by 10ft poster is truly huge. You'd need to go to a very specialized professional print shop to do that. And you should discuss resolution with the people at the shop beforehand.

OTOH, when my daughter was running in a school election, we printed a good-sized poster (I think it was 2x3 or 3x4; I don't remember) at a Walmarts. It was from a 4 megapixel camera and it looked great.

Remember...There's a difference between dpi and ppi. Wide format printers are available, but they are expensive. If you plan to be doing a very large volume of jobs like this, it may be worth spending the $1000 on the printer. If it is only the occasional job, let the local printer do it. If you don't like the local biz, you probably have a Kinko's or other chain near you.

You can print a large format document, such as a poster or banner, by splitting the page across multiple sheets of paper.

Well 10 × 10 ft? It's three meters and NO office/home printer is able to do that. I'm afraid Lincoln is right. Some printers, such as HP 990 Cxi, can print a poster made of several pages (e.g. 4 by 4) but it's never gonna be THAT big. Still, it may be satisfying for you. In fact, posters of this size are seldom unless they are on a storey house wall or something like that.
