Installed Microsoft Securities Essentials on 2 different machines (both running XP Home SP3) but got 2 different results. One works fine. Second worked fine until re-booted and notification icon disappeared from taskbar. Scoured MSE website and distressed by the variety of fixes; all fixed some, but not others. Eventually discovered that logging off (rather than shutting down computer) and logging back in under user account restored icon and function. However, MSE icon still does not appear automatically on re-boot as it does with first machine. Ran msconfig and MSE is checked on start-up menu. All other anti-virus software removed with Revo uninstall. Re-installed MSE multiple times. Any ideas on how to start MSE automatically on re-boot?

Hi and welcome to the forums. When you said the "all other" antivirus was removed using REVO uninstaller, if you were running Norton OR McAfee, you would still need to go to their repsective sites and use their removal tool. That could be your problem, as thier could be residual stuff still in there as is usually the case.

Although I failed to mention it initially, I did that too (Trend's PC-Cillin) but no help. Also used regedit to change icon display command line from "0" to "1" to no avail. Again, logging out & back in restores icon & function until next shut down. Other computer starts MSE function & shows icon automatically on boot up. Can't find difference between 2 machines in start up menu or user accts. Stumped.

Ok. Download and install www.CCleaner.com . Once that is done, uninstall MSE, then update and run CCleaner ( Should be updated, may want to check before removing MSE ). after running CCleaner, Reinstall MSE and see how that goes.

Hi Hapless :

Trend Micro has a "Diagnostic Toolkit" that they
recommend be used to uninstall all their security
programs ; did you make use of this "Toolkit" ?
I would quote its website, but it is extremely
long; best to find it by doing a Google "Search"
if interested .

Uninstalled MSE again, ran CCleaner (both for files & registry issues), reinstalled MSE and... same result. Note to Spiritwind - yes, used Trend's toolkit. I understnd the importance of removing conflicting antivirus programs, but I am begginning to think it is something else. After all, logging out & back in restores icon & function until next shut down and I don't have a clue why that should even work.
