dsscheibe,

FYI - Siber Systems is not rewriting their definition of a one time fee - and the new version 7 is considered a different app and they are charging existing Roboform Pro version 6 users a fee of $29.95 to upgrade (currently discounted by $10). I thought I had purchased a license that gave me lifetime upgrades - but that is not currently being honored by Siber Systems. I am switching over to LastPass - because of the mishandling of Roboform version 7. So, I am wondering about your opinion of Roboform in light of this change?

Hi from Greece,

I have been using Roboform for around 4 years and I am very pleased with it's functionality. It was a disappointment to see that Siber Systems does not honour their agreement.
Pardon me if I am wrong, but I think the only REAL functionality they added is the synchronization (for which I already have GoodSync, also from Siber Systems and so don't actually need it as a feature of Roboform).
I will continue to use it (I have already paid for it...) but I am searching for a replacement. Therefore, this article was very usefull for me. Even more valuable are other users feedback. Thank you PC World!

I suggest you go for Walletx (Please don't think I am a promotor of Walletx). You will love the free desktop version and moreover its cross compatible among all smartphones.

I use the Maxidix Password Angel and I am very happy with it. For those who wrote that all listed programs is difficult (I agree) I recommend this one.

They all look complicated, as I have many passwords and sites.
I have an Excel sreadsheet of passwords that is nearly six pages long in landscape orientation. I would not want to retype them. I have them sorted by password and by site name. They are arranged in a matrix form. Along with the differing rules for the password--some can be almost anything, some coan only be eight characters, some cannot take special characters, some only certain special characters, etc. Some expire in 90 days, some in 180 days, some never. (PC World password--who knows when it was last changed?)

Use KeePass. I have over 300 accounts between those of my customers (part time small business in tech support), my home and small business, plus accounts for a full time job as well. All have unique passwords and there are a lot of different usernames. All filed in folders according to what they are within KeePass. It works in all supported versions of Windows, Linux/Unix, Blackberry, Droid and MAC X. It can even be run from a flash drive without any installation! And it is open source totally Free without any ads!! BTW, I am not affiliated with KeePass except as a very satisified user of their product.

I hope you didn't name the file "My Passwords - Please don't open"!

I have been using RoboForm for a couple years now. I only use windows based systems and have Robform2go as well. It works well when I need to log into a site at work, I just plug in the USB drive and most of the time it automatically loads, some might have auto run turned off. My one complaint is for a program that started off as a form filler it does a poor job of recognizing a shipping address form. The ordinal form filler in Mozilla was the best one I've seen. I almost always ship things to work where I know someone will receive them. One thing the article didn't' mention is RoboForm uses another program called Goodsync to sync. All total buying RoboForm, Robform2go on a drive and Goodsync cost me close to $90, though that was a one time fee and I've gotten free updates since I purchased it. They also have an Online site which I haven't used. I sync a copy to a NAS drive and sync my laptop from there. The USB drive I just need to pug it into the home system and update it from there. I don't find it that hard to use but I'm more of an advanced user. I'm the person that usually fixes other peoples minor computer problems at work, though that is not my job really.

You do not have to pay for GoodSync in order for RoboForm to sync your data, I have been using RF for years and have not paid a extra cent for my data to sync.

I don't get it. These all seem rather obscure to me and some require an awful lot of faith in private clouds. Almost everyone I know uses one or more of the opensource variants of Keepass on their devices.

Call me biased, but I don't really agree with the 'cons' for LastPass. I think using your e-mail address for login is a smarter way than messing around with nicknames - nicknames are just as easily guessed as email addresses, plus you're much more likely to forget a nickname than you are your e-mail address. Lastly, I fail to see how the download options are 'complicated'? https://lastpass.com/download But I'll be giving the others a shot, so thanks for bringing them to my attention.

I totally agree. The implication that its OK not to use a strong password is appalling. Its VITAL that a strong password is used for almost all your sites, but especially the password to your passwords!

A password manager is firstly about remembering passwords, but as soon as you have one it now allows and verifies that a password is strong. There is no reason to make it simple. This makes your accounts virtually unbreakable.

I have been using LastPass for a long time and its brilliant. I have my whole family using it on iPhone, Windows and Mac and we share a few critical passwords like the kids gmail accounts so we can all access the sites and use strong passwords, and not require a simple password so we can all remember it.

We use 2 factor authentication so only authorised machines can access our account, plus strong passwords.

I don't know about other password managers, but LastPass has all the features that I have ever needed. I especially think that the ability to share a small subset of your accounts with your family is extremely useful and may be a feature which others do not have.

if we access the web we are essentially in the Cloud. Without a password manager your passwords will be much simpler and therefore easier to break. You leave yourself open to being broken into if you do not use strong passwords.

One option is not to use the Internet. The other option is a very good password manager. There are no other choices.

To use strong passwords properly you need a password manager. I do not know almost all of my passwords. They are just a bunch of hieroglyphics. Random characters.

Excel spreadsheet? Hopefully its secured by a strong password else someone who breaks into your PC has all your passwords.

If you put your passwords in the cloud you need to have multi-factor authentication and a strong password on that storage. I can only be broken into from one of my own machines, but even then the strong password needs to be known.

Internet passwords not strong and not stored securely? Absolutely does_not_compute!

I have used RoboForm for many years and find it to be convenient, safe & secure. I do not find it to be difficult to set up and have over 140 pass words that it remembers for me.
I recommend the program for all users. I use it on IE & Google without problems.

I've used RoboForm Pro for years and have never had a problem with it. It's so much easier than having to keep track of all my passwords. My only question would be, can someone hack into your account and have all your passwords and logons?
