whenever I download anything, I get the download (whereever I send it to, usually 'my documents' temporarliy) and I always get these 'thumbs' or 'DSC emblems'.....this has been happening for a long time, never tried to do anything about it till now. Any suggestion to stop it from happening? Thanks

the thumbs file that you're getting is made by windows, when you're viewing files in thumbnail mode it creates a file with basically an index of all of the pictures that are going to be displayed.

Open My Computer (or computer name)-menu bar>tools>folder options>view>Files and Folders>check Do not cache thumbnails. This will stop IT from happening and save drive space. Also search for Thumbs.db and delete all files with this name

I am still getting those pesky thumbs and 'dat' files....one I see is called a database file the other was 'configuration settings' both look like the thumb icons, and of course the thumbs....I did check off the right entry in view folders and I did a search for the 'thumbs db' which didn't bring up anything. Any other suggestions for getting rid of them? If it's from viewing everything or some things in thumbnails, how would I change that? Thanks for the help.

Open My Computer (or computer name)-menu bar>tools>folder options>view>Files and Folders>check Do not show hidden files and folders. search for Thumbs.db (Thumbs DOT db) to find and get rid of any existing thumbnail database files
