Phishing Sites Explode on the Web

If they would, Google and its competitors could help us out here. Their spider-surfers infest the net daily. Their databases can be programmed to red-flag sites deemed suspicious based on several criteria. ICANN could implement some (bound-to-be-clumsy and controversial) pre-publishing policing action or new domains. Squatter-type names (e.g., "WashingtonMuttual.com") should be automatically rejected. Then of course some other bureaucracy, association, public group, or specialized spiders, must revisit new sites to ensure that their initial facade doesn't change overnight to a phish-pond.

Good info. This situation keeps becoming worse and worse. You really have to be careful when your on the internet nowdays because you never know when it's actually going to happen to YOU. I really admire PC world for their knowledge and article on this. It's good to know.

The latest assault on mild mannered computer users (phishing) strikes fear in the heart of any internet user who might occasionally click on an email link and who depend on their internet connection to safely do online financial transactions. My comment is more of a question (or three). What about accounting software programs that you can setup to access your account information online, is there a concern that your software can somehow be affected by phishing? Can you count on the fact that the program is taking you to your bank's legitimate website where you enter and download sensitive account information? Can our software become the next target and are company's like Intuit focused on this issue? Thanks for all PC World's informative articles, as a middle of the road computer geek I learn something new and further fine tune my laptop with every issue.
