I purchased a new 80 gig hd to replace my 40 gig hd yesterday but Win XP Pro will not install on the new hd. I receive the screen checking system configuration and after a few seconds, the following error message is displayed:Line 5603 of the INF file i386txtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.I have searched far and wide for a solution to this error message but to no avail. Can someone please help me so that I can install the operating system on my new hard drive?P.S. I tried booting to the old 40 gig hd and wipe it clean using the XP cd but I still get the same message.

your disc may be corrupted. Try a different one (has it ever worked? Alternatively try your disc on another computer see if it will run correctly.)

If you need to have the computer running on something, you can always try a Linux LiveCD (won't touch your hard drive, just boot from the CD) like Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.net/get.php ) (of course, you'll need to download it from another computer), until you get it sorted out. Or if you're more bold, and just want a full Linux distro, try Mandriva or SimplyMEPIS (both will cost you a bit, but not nearly as much as Windows. Don't worry, they're very user-friendly.).But I suggest giving the first one a try. wink(Heard Linux, and came running.)

:lol:sorry bout the threadjacking for a moment. I just downloaded Ubuntu and installed it on a partition so I've been messing with it for a good part of the day. I'm pretty impressed with it once I get everything running we'll see how it goes.

Many people use LiveCDs when they can't get Windows to work correctly...Ubuntu is one of my top choices for Linux flavors right now. Probably about on par with Fedora for a lot of things. But for most users, Mandriva and Mepis are as easy as they come for transitioning... Though, I did use Debian first, which I was lost for a little bit on... Now that I know a lot more, I think most Linux distros are easy as pie if you know how to use a shell and can compile things yourself... Everyone is different..

The live cd feature was pretty cool, since you can demo the system without installing it to see if you like it.
