Early on, Microsoft adopted a marketing strategy of using simple, descriptive, one-work names. Word is an excellent example.
Windows fit that philosophy. At the time, graphic user interfaces (GUI) were still new. The Mac was the only one that had enjoyed any significant success. The word windows simply described one of the most obvious differences between a GUI and a command-line interface like DOS.

It was Microsoft Word long before there was a Microsoft Office (another simple name). I remember when Microsoft Word was a truly dreadful DOS word processor and WordPerfect was kicking its butt in every way.
I forgot to mention that the word Microsoft was always an important part of the name. You can't trademark a common word like word or windows. You can trademark your company name followed by a common word.
In fact, Microsoft once asked PC World to call the OS Microsoft Windows, rather than just Windows. We ignored the request.

I remember when Microsoft Word was a GUI based word processor on the Mac LONG before it was GUI based word processor for Windows. WordPerfect was THE word processor for DOS. Word did not become the default word processor for people to use until Windows really took off. WordPerfect sat on their tushie and did not shift it to Windows for a LONG, LONG time. And by then, Word was in a dominate position. Some people still preferred WordPerfect (and still do), but they were the minority once Windows took things over.

Word for Windows initially felt like a port of the Mac version, made by people pretending the DOS version didn't exist. That made sense, since the Mac Word was so good and the DOS one so bad.

LOL!
During that brief, pre-Internet time when the industry saw CD-ROM as a publishing platform for content, Redmond released a CD called Microsoft Dogs. I joked that it was a bundle of Money and Bob.

I've often wondered why no one released a program called Defenestration for Windows (if you don't get it, look it up).
But how many remember when Microsoft licensed the Rolling Stones' song Start Me Up for their Windows 95 ads. They carefully edited the song to avoid the one line that really seemed to fit Windows, "You make a grown man cry."
