Laser Disc? I haven't heard of one of those in 20 years. I'm probably one of the few in this forum that's even seen one for sale as a new item. For those that are unfamiliar, it was basically a 12" or so DVD. If they had come out before the VCR instead of afterward, video history would be different. They failed because of cost and the fact you could not record to them. In fact, only when you had recordable DVD's on the market, did the final nails go into the VCR coffin. For those interested in trivia, the first Floppy Discs were not 5 1/4", but 8" with a capacity of 1.2 MB. In fact the first HP Micro computers were available with dual 8" disc drives and used the CPM Operating System.

yea I grew up around ancient equipment compared to what I should have... I still listen to music on records with my dad. His stereo is ran mostly from a turntable that he has had since the 70s

Yea, I have one of those along with two small moving boxes of LP's. I have been intending to transfer the music from vinyl to digital, but just haven't gotten around to it. Converted to CD's in 1990 after being transferred back down here from central Virginia. With all respects to your Dad, CD's really are better, but don't upset him by mentioning it.

O he knows they are better but for all the records that he has it would be a pain for him to transfer it all he has a wall of nothing but records its probably 8 feet tall and about 6 feet wide. that is his collection I guess you could say. He loves it.

Back to the vinyl L.P.s (which had Picture discs, European imports which were the H.D. of sound and quality, the late 70s oil crisis causing thinner ,warped records due to the lack of "oil products" in the records), back then the concern on Turntables was "wow and flutter" caused by the motor drives (distortion), and in that case, belt drive cp. to direct drive. Also, one of the biggies was Duals excellent tracking system, where you could actually tilt (not that you would want to) the player at a 35 degree angle and it would still track and play. For me, back then, being able to set my 10 band per channel EQ to "flat response" was about as high tech. as I got, cp to you all who have grown up in the computer age, and are very sharp about computing.:)

We never had a laserdisc player in my family, but I remember when my dad took us out to buy a CD player and told us it would change the world. He also said that about his (permanently installed) car phone, his (giant) laptop, his (giant) cell phone, and the internet, when we first signed on to Prodigy.

It sounds like your dad has some good instincts, did he happen to buy any Microsoft stock at $2.00 a share? :)

Arsen1c, he probably has some valuable "relics" in his collection. I remember hearing Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Air II, andFresh Air 3 (1977 & 79) on their high quality vinyl recording, "blow away".:)

yea I know he has quite a few that he said where pretty hard to get. He has the beatles white album still in the plastic and some others that he said where really good but I cant think of the name of them. We used to sit around listening to Billy Joel and Steely Dan when I was younger and it progressed into a little bit of everything

Rgreen - - Had you ever seen a hard disk that had a 12 inch platter?? That's old. I have a few customers that still have then. They weigh about 90 pounds and are a real pain. I used to work on a system that used 8 track tapes to load programs and the very earliest units used cassette tapes to load programs.. Some older control systems I work on have a 12 inch platter of only 10 MB, one even has a fixed 10 MB platter and a 10 MB removable disk. Real museum pieces.

[quote name='mphenterprises']Arther. How is that 1000 Watt Power Supply working for you?So far its been perfect.....have not noticed any issue's with it yet. The main reason I went with that one is because in the future I might drop in a 2nd 8800GTX 768MB card and wanted to make sure I had enough power. Plus on my old machine I was always lacking on power so I wanted to make sure that I did it right this time.

30 here.I have been using PCs extensively for about 12 years. I did take a programing class the summer before 4th grade though on some Apple IIs I want to say. Dual floppy units, one for applications and one for storage. After that I really did not play with computers extensively until I turned 18 and started working at CompUSA.

Hi jimr. I have a question for you. Did anything "click" with you when you turned 30? I know when I turned 30, I began to see things, life in general, a lot clearer.
