I'm hit with (almost) mixed emotions when reading this story. On one side, I'm glad that they failed to break into the iPhone so soon. Well, they DID do a bit of impressive hacking, but I'm glad they didn't do anything substantial. On the other hand, I hate how phone companies have a huge ringtone business. I'm sorry, but if my phone is an iPod, I'm certainly not going to pay for some crappy ringtones.Either way, I'm glad that the iPhone hasn't been fully hacked yet and there's a reason for that. For years I've been using Apple's computers. During that time I've also used PCs that run Windows. My Macintosh IIsi never got a virus and neither did any of the Macs that came after that. The PCs got countless viruses. What I'm saying is that Apple has been able to make excellent technology, which never seems to get fully exposed, and I want it to stay that way.I feel that if the iphone gets hacked, maybe my laptop will be full of spyware and viruses one day.

all cell phones should be unlocked as they endup that way anyway it would make the providers more competive and allow the public more to make their own decissions based on price and service they want i have a g4 and use pay as u go which allows me full control no contract so i can change sim card for europe and asia at no cost.

I have been a Cellular One user for 5 years. Each timethe contract is to be renewed, I am offered a new phone, free. I find they are more complicated and confusing. I forgot my home charger one day after departing on a week long trip. I discovered I had packed one of my old phones, one from three years ago. I put in my sims card and it worked perfectly. Full signal, great sound, and it felt like an old friend.

Scottie,

That's about the only valid reason I've heard so far for unlocking a phone: To use it in a country where the carrier whom you originally signed the contract with isn't able to provide service. Otherwise, the whole argument about unlocking a phone is a bit stupid.

AT&T has extensive coverage in the US (Verizon is possibly about the same - but is CDMA not GSM) and the customer knows what he's getting into when he sign the agreement with AT&T (you did read the contract before signing didn't you?). So it makes no sense to me why all these people are whining and crying about having a locked iPhone when they never use it outside of the US. If they are leaving the country to use the phone, why do they leave this most important detail out when complaining?

It seems to me (and this is just my opinion) that there are a number of people out there who have a legitimate reason for wanting to use another carrier's SIM while abroad, the rest are just crying because they need something to cry about.
