Hi all,I am going to be replacing my 7 year old Gateway system. It's been good to me and still works it's just slow and I need a faster system. I will be buying both a laptop and a desktop and I will be using these new systems to surf the web, email, downloading and storing music(no more than 800 songs at any given time) and I also want to get into a little web design and graphic design for my own personal venture. I want to get another Gateway since they have been reliable for me. I spoke to the Gateway rep and here is what he suggested, please tell me if the memory, hard drive, processor, etc..is enough. Thanks!:Laptop:Gateway NX860SModify Item | Add Related Items.Express shipping not available on this item. $1,207.98 Remove $1,207.98 Hide Details Customized Options Processor Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T2060 (1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache) Operating System Genuine Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (Update Rollup 2) Memory 1024MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2-512MB modules) Hard Drive 60GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive Display 17.0" WXGA TFT Active Matrix (1440 x 900 max. resolution) Optical Drive 24x/10x/24x CD-RW / 8x DVD Combo Drive Wireless Network Integrated Intel 3945 802.11a/b/g wireless networking Mobile Technology Features Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology Accidental Damage Plan Three years accidental damage plan Adapter 65 Watt AC Adapter Application Software Microsoft Works 8.5 Backup Media Cyberlink CDRW and PowerDVD Solution (2-Channel) (for Windows XP) Battery Primary 8-Cell Lithium Ion Battery w/ 1 Yr. limited battery warranty Chassis Chassis w/ Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 & Intel 943GML Chipset Expansion Slots One type II PC card slot External Ports (4) USB 2.0, VGA, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), S-Video (TV-Out) Internet Service Provider 90-day America Online Internet access Keyboard and Mouse Full-size keyboard w/ integrated 10-key pad and EZ Pad Pointing Device Media Card Reader 6-in-1 media card reader (MemoryStick, MemoryStick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, Mini Secure Digital, RS-MultiMedia Card) Modem Integrated V.92 56K modem Network Integrated Intel 10/100/1000 Ethernet Adapter Operating System Backup Media Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Backup Media Security Software McAfee 90-day Internet Security Suite Complimentary Subscription with VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus, SpamKiller & Privacy Service (for Windows XP) Software Documentation End User License Agreement for Non-Microsoft Software Standard Software Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 and Google Toolbar Warranty 3 Year Value Plan (Tech Support - Parts - Factory Labor) Shipping and Tax CalculatorSelect Method Est. The graphics, are weak on both units, they need to be DX10 and VISTA compatable, .......tell them that, .....also both units have pentium D chips in them, you do NOT want those, while they do OK, they are old tech, and produce hugh amounts of heat and consume energy like starving pigs, really bad in a notebook, .......tell them you want CORE 2 DUO , CPU's , .......last thing you will probably want 2 GB of RAM, as Vista is a hugh memory hog. I am recomending all this based on your , most likely , wanting to hold on to them for several years and will likely sometime in the future move to Vista.

I will call him back and tell him this. I knew something was up because I expected to pay alot more for what I wanted than what he quoted me. Is your recommendations for both the desktop and the laptop or just the desktop? Also, do you have any idea how much more those recommendations will tack on to the quoted price? Yes, I plan to keep my computers for 4-5 years before trading them in and I do plan to upgrade to Vista when it is more widely compatible. So everything else is okay? Also, I am buying a desktop computer for my 14 year old neice who will only be using her computer to surf the net, download music and very light gaming, the gateway rep said that the desktop quoted would be good for her as well. What do you think about that?

Peggyfair, as I was going through the list, I was thinking, she can do better than this. I have been prowling the HP website, as I have been getting ready to buy a new laptop.I would recommned you log onto HP.com, and look at three areas. First, review the laptops available in the entertainment section. In the 17" check out the dv9500t, and when you get it up on the screen, click on the customize. Then you can add any times you want. The dv9500t with the Core2Duo T7100, Vista Home Premium, 1680x1050 Brightview screen, 2GB memory, nVidia 8600M discrete video card with 511MB memory, wireless AGN, 2 120GB Hard Drives, High Capity 8 cell battery& a set of recovery discs will run a little over $1500.You can also prowl the desktop lines and see how they compare. The third area i think you should prowl is the driver and download section. On the opening screen on the lower left are support&troubleshooting and driver&download buttons. Just check out support section. I do not have anything against Gateway, in trying to help others on this forum, I have found their support site is not as complete as HP, Dell, Sony and some others. I'm not sure why you are leaning toward XP Media Center 2005. I had it on my HP Media Center PC and was glad to get rid of it. I found it quirky and not quite Vista, but not quite XP either. The menu visuals are closer to Vista than the traditional XP. Some of my problems may have been trying to stick with Norton's Internet Security 2007, when I should have deep sixed it earlier. I did when I installed Vista Home Premium. While you can buy various books on XP Home and Pro, and of course Vista, I have yet to see a book on XP Media Center. It seems to be the red-headed stepchild of Windows opertating systems. Kind of a patch to XP until Vista Home Premium was ready for release. With new machines at this time, the only reason not to go with Vista, is if you have Legacy progams or periphials that will not work with Vista. Older scanners and All-In-One printers are about the only devices that do not have Vista drivers now.As always its your money, but shop around and get the most you can for that, be it Gateway, HP or some other brand. Up until recently I probably would not have been in a postition to think too highly of Dell, but there have been several incidents lately when a Dell Tech has joined in on the forum discussion to help a Dell Owner. When that happens most of us just kind of fade back and let the tech handle it, but keep an eye on the process. That shows a commitment to satisfaction that has not been their reputation in the past.

Rgreen, the entire specs that you see was the recommendation of the sales rep I spoke to. I told him I didn't want Vista now, so he just picked that system. I will check out HP. Thanks!

Thanks Spike. I went to the HP website as Rgreen recommended and it seems as if they are cheaper than Gateway. Gateway is very expensive. The only downside is that all of HP's machines come with Vista only. What are your thoughts on getting Vista instead of XP on a new machine? Vista kind of scares me. LOL.

Thats a lot better!!, ...........however you still don't have DX10 capable video cards ( or chips ), in any of the three???? , too expensive?, forgot to ask ?, don't care ? 4GB of RAM will do you no good, 32bit vista will only recognise 3.25 GB and in some cases, exceding that limit will actually slow the comp. down.

If so, what online store is the cheapest for memory as far as your experiences?
