Dave, you did not mention the single-most important piece of advice for portrait photography: Forget the shoes!
Yes, as a former professional photographer, I can confirm it is almost always the one difference beween pro-quality pics and the usual amateur snapshots. That is, trying to include the whole of the subject, from top to toes. Forget the shoes and concentrate on just the face of the subject. Compare the first picture in the article with the second to appreciate the difference.

Little trick for portrait photography: When you have the subject framed say, as fast as you can, "Don't look at me, look at the bartender!" You'll get a subject who (a) looks interested instead of bored and (b) isn't staring deer-in-the-headlights right at the lens. Works even better if you're not in a bar. ;)

Your article on macro-photography left out a very important tool ... the reversing ring. It turns every one of your lenses into a macro, for just a few bucks!
