The interesting thing about Vista is that most pre-built middle-of-the-road systems from HP, Dell, etc. are configured with 1GB (or in some cases 512MB) of RAM, and Vista Home Premium. In order for Home Premium to run with the Aero interface, you should really have at least 2GB of RAM. The average user isn't going to spend time figuring such things out (or reading the recommendations to upgrade to 2GB).
Personally, I find Vista to be quite resource-hungry. It is nice eye candy, but OS X has much better eye candy and it uses fewer system resources to achieve the visual effects.

I just went through the pain of taking Vista off two computers rather than the expense of getting new programs. My WinFax and Ghost would not work at all with Vista and my 1GB computer felt like it was back in the 300baud era.
I really think that the computer manufactures need to do more to remind people that Vista needs more food and fuel to run correctly.
As a matter of fact, they should not sell Vista on any system below the 2gb level. There also should be some way to UN-install Vista or at least install another OS over it. This backing up and then formatting the drive is for the birds.
