Overpriced?! I got my 60G at $600 and I still think I got a great value. Especially with standalone blu-ray players at around a $1000. Gimme a break. This is a great move on Sony's part. They combined the most needed features in this new 40G version. It is a good all around package. PS3 still the best multi-media gaming platform.

The deal breaker is that this configeration won't play PS 2 games. I have too much invested there to jump at this model.

Guess I'll have to wait.

I can understand if a PS3 is the first Playstation you've owned, for it to have backwards compatability. But a lot of PS3 owners also own the PS2 and some the PS1 included. I own all three. Sure it's nice to have backwards compatability but it's almost always better to play a game on the original console it was designed for. If you read the backwards compatability footnotes on consoles they always say that some features originally in the game may not be available. Unless you play the game on it's respective console.

I agree with alxm on the price, and videomaker on backwards-compatibility.

A Blu-Ray player will cost from $500-$1000, average being about $600. The PS3 is not only a cheap Blu-Ray player, it also has just a bit of extra functionality as a GAME CONSOLE.

And Video, my PS2 is pretty old. I've had it for, oh, three years now. It's starting to act up, so I'd like to get a PS3. I don't think I need the storage of the 80GB version, but I like that it is backwards compatible. Not to mention it's cheaper.

wow, this is great and think about what you are saying people, if you want backwards compatibility for your massive ps2 collections, i'm better you still have your ps2. Just bring it out again if you want to play older games. Its not that hard. Pssh, too much invested my ass. Your just lazy and want everything rolled into 1 for less than $100. well, then your never gonna get a new system. Look at the 360, you need to buy a completely separate hd-dvd drive to watch movies. The elite is like 500 plus 150 for the extra drive to watch movies, and then you have this, which is 399 better hardware and can watch movies without the need of a separate drive. The wii, well, its a wii and its just a fun system. Though it doesn't ahve a significant increase in hardware from the gamecube, its fun and a good party machine.
So stop complaining. The ps3 is one of the best systems out their for the value, and wide range of use. And if you sold your ps2, and can get it back for like $50.

First, I own a PS 2, which is inoperable due to the built in obsolesce and error messages. My poor children can't play their favorite games now. So if a company comes out with a new machine, I shouldn't expect it to be backwards compatible? I should just flush all those games down the toilet? Sorry, if that's the way a company plays the game, I won't be a player.

How how about if the electric company changes it's voltage, and specs....and says new homes will have this new system. Now when you move into this new home you will have to throw away all your electronics and electrics. Might you be a little.....uh perturbed? If Sony made the PS 2 to be reliable and last many years...I wouldn't have a problem with this.....but everyone is having their PS 2s act up and become unusable.

If you think about it though backwards functionality is frosting on the cake. And I believe Sony is the one that started it with there PS's. I've been playing games since the Atari, Colecovision and Intellivision days. Then Nintendo and Sega came along but when they came out with a new system, the new system was not backwards compatible. You just lived with the fact that if you wanted to play your old games, you played them on the system for that game. Backwards compatability never really even crossed my mind and I think most other old time gamers.

But it does suck if your old PS2 is acting up. I was lucky that I was able to trade in my big old PS2 for the slimmer, built-in internet adapter version.

did you ever think about using google for your problems, i had the same problem, disc error message right? well i had the same problem and it took me all of ten seconds to find out how to fix it, then another 30 minutes to actually do it, use your brains people. And if you want backwards compatibility buy the 60 gb version that has it. and to save you the "trouble" of searching for your error message on google, i did it for you,
arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
now was that too hard?

and your ps2 is not working, well stop complaining and if you want to play and let your children play the games again, either fix it, buy a backwards compatible ps3 or search ebay for a ps2 thats cheap and working. cause you complaining on the backwards compatibility of a cheaper version of a product that the other versions have built in will definitely fix your lack of gaming problems...
