This is a very nice, informative article.
I never thought about the impact the transistor has had on society other than computing and networking. I am impressed at the newest intel processing standards, and their predicted "reliable" future to come with processors.

The first transistors were pretty huge things, packages that were as big as a thumbnail and had only one discrete device. Now thet can put millions of junctions in the same space. Some devices such as power transistors used for audio amplification and RF power are still huge but need that size to provide adequate heat sinking to reduce the heat produced. That will still be the biggest determining factor in the production and reduction in size of any application - - HEAT.
