You guys are not being very creative at all. Haven't you read Neal Stephenson's snow crash? I want to see ad-hoc automated mesh networking with transparent encrypted packet store/forward/passing. when you have a critical mass of devices, the necessity for an isp goes away. i want to see the phone use many more frequencies to talk to home cordless phones as well as the voip you mentioned among other radio tranceiving features. sound or sight activated camera would be nice. sound activated recorder. high quality audio recording with a mic would be nice.... text scanner/ocr... garage door opener... car alarm fob... (hm hackers could probably make a program that listens to other fobs. good thing they have rotating security, meh) but remote control for lights in the house, easypass-like features... purchasing ability like european celphones have... there is so much this thing can do!

The catch was, to install these third-party apps, users had to "jailbreak" their iPhones, which works by intercepting the communication that is supposed to happen between the iPhone and iTunes-- thereby voiding the warranty and running the risk that future iPhone software updates would render the phone inoperable. (emphasis Rastamon's)
Did the author even read the iPhone's warranty before writing this? As long as the hardware is not damaged, the iPhone's warranty is not voided.
From the warranty (emphasis mine):
Quote
?This Limited Warranty applies only to hardware products manufactured by or for Apple that can be identified by the ?Apple? trademark?
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products?
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products?
Additionally, most states have implied warranties that must be honored by manufacturers. In other words, if Apple, or anyone else, sells a product advertised as a phone, the customer has a reasonable expectation for that product to function as a phone. Apple may well be within their legal rights to only allow the iPhone to function as a phone on AT&T's networks, but lacking any physical damage to the hardware, even an iPhone bricked from jailbreaking, third party software installs, etc; is still covered under Apple's warranty, regardless of what the local Apple Store's Genius?, Steve Jobs or AT&T claim.
Perhaps a bit of research is in order before --PC World-- Macworld spreads additional FUD regarding jailbreaking and the iPhone warranty.

You should try out shiznip.com for social networking. It allows you to create a mobile profile on a desktop, gives you an email address that you will put in your cellphones contact list and allows you to instantly upload images and blurbs from your phone to the internet. With the creation of online albums you can get a script that you can add to your myspace or face book and instantly upload your photos to those sites as well. Its still new but so far works awesome. It is highly recommended to try out. www.Shiznip.com

18 out of 25 of these 'apps' are already available via jailbreak and install.app just off the top of my head- give me a break.
a REAL top 5 not yet available for the iphone:
1) Flash safari plugin / native player
Jobs is an idiot - we want flash on our iphones
2) A2DP / Serial bluetooth app.
Make bluetooth finally work with GPS units, stereo headsets, and wireless sync. Someone wrote one for the treo 650 which had an inferior radio - shouldn't be too difficult
3) Native skype client.
Nuff said. don't want front ends or apps that pass onto other clients. Don't want to pay the phone company if I'm on my wireless network
4)Tethering / wireless AP
App to allow the iphone to act as a portable hotspot making edge available to surrounding wifi clients. Already available on N95 and pocketpc's.....
5) VLC
Only app mentioned in the article which isn't already available......
