Down loaded automatic updates for Vista on A HP Lap Top. After a restart my Sound went away. Trouble shooting told me
I didn't have a Sound Card. I'm just learning about Drivers and stuf. I put my back up DVD in and down loaded my Sound Driver, but now I get A garbled sound sometimes. Give me XP any Day. Dave

To Whom,

It is my opinion that in order to have a beneficial discussion both sides of the question must be considered. I upgraded to Vista early last year and like most folks I was sorta pissed because I had to buy new stuff to make the system work. Since purchasing a new motherboard, sound card, hard drive and a bunch of memory my system has never been better. I am a home user and spend 8 hrs a day checking stuff out. I actually live a good part of my life on this contraption and luv every moment of it. I can't say that there have been any probs with Vista, it seems to take care of itself. I downloaded the SP1 recently and once again have suffered absolutely no problems. Just wanted it known that one individual loves his Vista, thank you very much Bill Gates. I have used the Windows OS since 3.1, do we remember DOS?. I have used each of the new systems since and somehow believe it has much to do with the operator. cya .............

I waited for SP1 to fix Vista woes prior to purchasing a new machine. What have I got? An OS that is as unstable as the old Windows 95, It crashes frequesntly, booting is a crap shoot and third party software is a gamble ($$$). For example, I recently tried to install the Steganos Privacy Suite on my computer. After a couple of minutes without activity, the computer [HP Pavilion Elite m9150f] would freeze forcing a power shutdown in order to regain control of the system. I have had problems with other software as well. Also, the system may be faster than pre-SP1 [I will have to go by what I have read], it is still unbelievably slow compared to XP. I think somebody missed the boat that was supposed to make the OS software faster, more reliable, more secure and a better system in today's communication world. Has Microsoft become a has-been as a software [and hardware] leader? I can only go by the results - and they are not good.

I really have a difficult time with what I am hearing from these postings. First of all I have just bought an HP Pavillion desktop it has a Core2Quad processor, 4 gigs of memory and a 750 gig hard drive.. It's not slow at ALL and it's probably the fastest computer I have ever owned. It's running Vista Home Premium x64 (64-bit edition)..
Most of the people complaining here have several issues:

One not having hardware that fits Vista requirements, or Two they are trying to run old software that wasn't designed for Vista on it..

To the guy with new HP Pavillion who killed is own machine with Steganos Privacy:

. I have never heard of the Steganos Privacy Suite, but if the user bought this for XP and it doesn't say Vista compatible, it's obviously one of those programs least likely to run, because it's a privacy program. Obviously Vista was rewritten for security from the ground up and wouldn't have the same types of privacy concerns (not to say it's unlikely there are not others). But programs that search out viruses and malware and check for things hidden in areas of the computer that might be specific to one version of Windows.. Think about it, did you ask for a Vista version of this software from the maker, or check to see if the maker said it's compatible. Microsoft has never said that it would run all the software from the previous version or there wouldn't be breaking changes.

I think you set yourself up for this not to work, by installing this software, for someone concerned about privacy and security you should know enough not to load a program designed for security written for a previous version of the OS that is not updated to support the new OS.. I'd expect this kind of thing to fail first.. The old think before you install and make sure your version is compatible before installing.. That's what the Vista Compatibility checker was made for, running it before updating your OS to let you know things that would run and not run before you installed vista.. It's still a free download at Microsoft.com..

In my opinion you humbled your own machine and it's your own fault.. Just remove that incompatible privacy program that obviously isn't following rules and going into places on your machine that are offlimits to normal software.

To the guy who's sound went away after SP1 was applied:

You haven't been following the problems with old audio drivers (for Vista) that were written incorrectly initially up to version 5 or six that caused service pack 1 not to work with them. You can resolve that though by just updating your drivers and keep them updated regularly.. Microsoft actually didn't make SP1 available over Windows Update to everyone and was having it checked for a while, and if it found that old version of the audio driver on your system and you hadn't updated it for a long time it wouldn't let you know SP1 was available and could be applied. You needed to make sure all of your drivers were up-to-date before applying SP1 over windows/microsoft update..

My suggestion is make sure your old audio driver is uninstalled and get a new driver and install it. Your audio should then work perfectly. You just had an old version installed when you applied SP1, so your audio isn't working. It isn't the end of the world, just keep your drivers up-to-date..

Read this post and keep up with this blog:

It will tell you in the advent of issues like this ahead of time..

[~87952],

1. If you just bought your machine and it's not working properly why do you assume the problem is the operating system? Obviously you got a lemon of a machine. You need to call HP support as they are the ones responsible for your trouble.

2. Windows 95 was stable for a long time. Not sure what your point was.

3. Make sure you are using version 2008 of your Steganos software.

llabmik - I will invite you as I have others who have stated they have problems with certain aspects of their Vista machines. Post you problem in the Windows discussion area NOT the news discussion area. Very few of the regulars who do most of the help for members with problems ever bother to look in a news discussion. When they look at the main pages lists the see "Angry Vista Users Vent ..." and go elsewhere. Now a discussion thread with the heading "Having trouble installing Security Suite" would catch their attention and it would be concentrated on your particular posted problem, not a generalized opiinion.

Even those of us who do peruse both, will not address specific problems in the news discussion because it is off topic. The topic of this discussion is the news item that was published in PC World.

There are many who assist others, but it sometimes takes several questions and answers to help get to the bottom. Give us a shot at helping, you have only a little time to lose. To start a new discussion in the Windows area, click here.

I installed Microsoft update KB938371 and after rebooting all my mice quit working along with all USB devices.

I called Microsoft support and after 4 hours I was passed to advanced support

Problem Description:

Unable to use the mouse after installing Windows Update, KB938371

Troubleshooting Performed:

Installed drivers from C:WindowsSystem32DriverstoreFileRepositorymsmouse.inf_3dfa3917 Current Status: PS/2 mouse functionality restored.

Current Status: PS/2 mouse functionality restored.

Action Plan:

We would like to get in touch with you again so we can perform some more diagnosis and develop a solution.

I now have a hardware mouse but my Microsoft USB Optical Intellimouse and all other USB devices do not yet work.

I have spent about 9 hours total with on the phone with advanced Microsoft support plus 4 hours from the first tech, the guy is very nice but still no solution. This is a bug in the update that Microsoft is aware of and has everybody working on it.

From what I understand this bug has a very specific set of ingredients and I also understand I am one of the first to get any kind of mouse back.

I was without any kind of mouse for a week. Try using Windows without a mouse, that really sucks. I hope they fix it soon.

do two things for me.

right click a blank part of your screen, and select personalize.

from there select screen saver.

on the bottom left select change power settings.

put a check in the high performance check box.

close and click ok.

next, right click my computer and select properties.

on the left part of the screen that popped up, click device manager.

the UAC control box will pop up, click ok or continue.

in device manager, click the + sign next to usb devices.

right click and uninstall everything you see there from the bottom up startting with the usb root hubs, and continuing with the usb host controllers.

make sure you get them all, then reboot.

that fixed mine when it had this issue..
