I think you are wright but I disagree with the part that you said that pcworld used the programs after they
kmow that are 100% safe, well it might be true but I don't believe. I can see that people that posted in this
Forums may do it, I might agree. Anyway you mentioned few programs that I never tested before I will take a
look at it very interesting. I don't know if you heard about Comodo Pro Firewall and Outpost Firewall I like
Comodo Pro because is ability of self learning it is the best Firewall out there and it can interact very well
with Vista Firewall default. There quite few more that are free.

Hey MATT!!
I have to agree with you on one point .That is that, PCW are a bit slow in reporting
new stuff.
But on the other hand , the power of 40 thousand plus members is greater than
just a handful of editors .
If you want slow then cNet and download.com would fit the bill .
I subscibe to both of these sites for up-dates and by the time they send me the
up-dates to the programs or utilities that i would like up-dates to, I have already
done so on my own.
Why not put your expertise and knowledge to greater use and simply report
what you have found to be excellent , good or mediocre in the applications
that you test.
It does no one any good to bash PCW all the time.
Most of us are here to help and inform other members.
It is obvious that you are very knowledgeable in all things PC
Just put it where it will do the most good.
FLASHORN.

well cnet/download.com's reviews tend to suck anyways. their reviews are bias they 90% of the time give high marks to popular products. i mean go look at their reviews for avast home, avg free and antivir personal and all 3 have 5 star ratings. the best download site for reviews is softpedia.com they rate the product by performance and value. i dont agree with all but its at leats unbiased and not driven by whats popular. here are some of their editor ratings. now for more up to date editor reviews you wanna check out snapfiles which i place in the middle of softpedia and download.com in accuracy.
avast *
antivir
avg *
the only reasons they rate avast higher is cause it offers 6 protective shields and doesnt have the notifier antivir does. avg is rated lowest cause its not better at anything than the other 2. i understand their ratings i would switch the ratings between avast and antivir myself because to me detection is my main thing
opera *
firefox
ie8 beta *
only reason opera is rated ahead of firefox is because firefox hasnt been re reviewed for like 2 yrs, flock which is firefox with dif theme and add-ons got a 5 star rating. ie8 beta got a low review because there isnt much dif between 8 and 7, it doesnt stand up well to acid3 test, it is still light years behind in technology
jkdefrag gui *
revo uninstaller *
regseeker *
they tend to agree with me on most everything and when they dont its between one star and there is justification behind it.

Thankx MATT!!
It's so nice to read an honest review!
I will agree with you on two points:
First , MY first concern is also detection.
Second , is that yes, cNet and download.com's reviews are sometimes a little one sided.
What I will however disagree with, is that AntiVir Avira's should be in the middle of the class.
In my experience with it , It deserves to be on top. As I said, it's detection is far better than the other two.
I have posted these sites before maybe you have missed them but, if
you did take a look at them , it would be nice to have your opinion.
Gizmo's Tech Support alert
and
Freebyte
Gizmo tests all of the apps. on his site and gives an honest review
of what was tested. He just recently updgraded his site so ,if some of the links on the main page
are dead it's because of the revamping. They should be up and running very soon.
Freebye is also another site for freebies but, some are shareware.
You will only get a description of the app. on this site.
What I usually look for is a site that will give a full account of
the apps. that they have up for download.

I see this list seems to be an Apple love fest. Last time I checked this magazine was called PC World not Mac World. As for the Apple products touted, go ahead and buy, that's if you want looks and not substance. Both computers mentioned are a far cry from either superior performance or speed, and don't get me started on upgrade abillity. Apple have done a fine job of snowballing the media as well as computer newbies. If only ten percent of what they claim was true.If it was, 85% of us would be using Apple products, not the other way round.

Would have been nice if there was some information about what operating system the different software would run on. Like PC Tools new software, that would not run on XP x64.
Like on this page:
http://www.pcworld.c...nloads/file/fid,64144-order,4-page,1-c,antivirus/description.html?osFilter=20&licenseFilter=&catId=1444&page=1&order=4
there is just an option to search for apps to WINDOWS XP. This will give hits on apps that is not compatible with XP x64..
PLEASE FIX THIS!!!
BTW: Older versions of Spyware Doctor (before 5.0) will install and run fine on XP x64.

Darklighting
I have not gotten on the net for a little time I WAS relying on AVG to look out for my PC
when one day it flashed red and told me that some thing bad was trying to get my system
I told it to block it BUT it loaded it and ran the dam thing
it cost me 100$ it get it wiped and renewed it would not even start up
I went back to a payed Norton all is good now just good that I have the best on a second hard drive
FREE IS NICE IF THE DAM THING WORKS

The first time MS Word document I tested with abiword, it could not handle the placement of graphics. OpenOffice has handled every one of the hundreds of documents I've used it for with no problem at all. The only negative I have to say about OpenOffice is its slow startup time.
