Still no Vista SP1 update

Read somewhere that although users can download the update directly from MS's site, it's generally not recommended as it could cause some type of driver issues. Also that it's better to just let the update download automatically.
Should I simply continue to wait or force the update? Heck, it's been available for around a month now.

My advise. Sit tight and wait for the update to matriculate into your system. I am sure we are not the only two people who are still waiting for the update. From what I have seen within this forum as well as other sources, SP1 is not all it's cracked up to be.
If you get too itchy and have to scratch, here is the direct Vista SP1 Update download from Microsoft.

Hi Tech. Thanks for the news. Yes, I have been anxious as well but I see no reason to rush into it just yet. If I get to the point where I cannot wait anymore, I will force it through.

As far as I am concerned, yes. SAS is a Spyware application and Avast is a Virus application. However, if you have any specific questions, feel free to post them within that Discussion and I will do my best to answer.

Make sure you don't have any beta versions of SP1 installed , if present uninstall it. Check if the updates required for SP1 auto install are present - KB937287, KB935509, KB938371 are present. Make sure you haven't installed any service pack blocker tools offered earlier by msft.
Mine didnt show in auto updates as i didnt install the pre-requisite updates (coz i had the beta earlier), uninstalled beta and got the stand-alone one.

Once everything loaded, I had to change the resolution of my monitors (all of them reverted to 1024 x 768). I also had to adjust the picture quality on the two smaller 30" monitors. Other than that, there was no issue whatsoever. I do not see any difference as of yet but I will post if I see any significant changes.

hey mph
It may seem to a bit slow initially just after the update but it will be fine in 2-3 days as the performance data is rebuild. And ya , that was a really long restart in my case also.

I didn't get the SP1 because I heard too much bad stuff about it. Would you get it? I heard that it does speed up copying and stuff, but that it wasn't worth it because of other problems it introduced.
*PS i hope SP3 for XP's coming soon... or is it?

I simply rolled the driver back and voila - my sound worked again.
I updated the main Vista drive this morning to SP1, (from off my network drive since the download is too big for my flaky internet) and it took about an hour. There were several restarts which it took care of. I was on another machine and was aware of the restarts by the Vista "tones" on start up. If you have kept your Vista machine up-to-date with all the updates, there should be no quantum change, but before I upgrade my laptop, I will update my clone drive, JIC.
I believe I heard that XP SP3 will be released next week.

As for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), I agree with RGreen, I have heard that it should be released within a week or so. Microsoft may just wait until the monthly release next month but, again, that is only a few days away anyway.
P.S. I still have the Dual Boot WikiDocument in progress. Been a long time in the making but my time is stretch very thin.

XP SP3 RTM is already available for the technet subscribers since 25th april. It will be on download center on 29th april and also on auto-updates . But there isnt much in the SP3 , just previous updates along with a couple of new things .
hi mph
regarding sp1, dont you have a decreased ram usage at idle conditions. Try hibernate and see if its better . Best of all, see network file copy rate. And dont forget a new format when formatting the portable drives. There wasnt much except file copy problem in vista that needed fixing and that has been done in sp1.

Yes Piyush you re right , SP3 is available right now.
Here is what they ( TechNet ) have to say about it
h1. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Updated April 23, 2008
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) stand-alone is now available for download. Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system, in addition to a small number of new updates. Windows XP SP3 will not significantly change the Windows XP experience.
Installation media and documentation on disc for Windows XP SP3 may sometimes refer to Windows XP SP2. Windows XP SP2 installation guide instructions apply to Windows XP SP3.

Windows XP SP3 will be available to non-subscribers on 4/29 via Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.
I think I just gave you a direct link to download the SP3 .
I will today or tomorrow install SP3 and see if it will affect anything.
I just finished cleaning out and defragging and reorganized
my PC for this purpose. I will report my findings in a few days.

Hi Piyush. Regarding my recent installation, my RAM and CPU Usage is minimal as it is (maximum at boot is 23%). I have noticed a small increase (by increase I mean decrease CPU Usage). Personally, I believe I may be the wrong person to test whether SP1 is worth the installation. My average CPU and RAM usage is another person's initial figures. I have been blessed so far that my system is at its peak, and will be at its for a long time.
