Greetings.
I might need to do a WinME reinstall ...
because it might be the only way
to restore to WinME the functionality
to bind IPX/SPX to PCMCIA/USB adapters -
which for some unknown reason
has ceased to function.

If I need to do a WinME reinstall,
I would prefer the reinstall
to be as nondestructive as possble.
I suppose a repair reinstall would be
less destructive than a full reinstall.
In either case I am wondering if I could
restore my current Programs subfolders &
the registry ALONG WITH the other
items mentioned in the PCWorld article
"How To Reinstall Win Without Losing Data".

Any insights appreciated.

Greetings.
I found answers at the two links below.

I restored the WinME cab files
to c:windowsOptionsinstall and ran setup.
At 65%, as referenced at link#2 above,
I encountered the suwin error.
After finding link#2 above & its solution,
I reran setup - this time successfully;
however, I still could not bind IPX/SPX
to any new adapters. I then restored
my pre-Reinstall image of the c: partition.

I suppose/hope that doing a clean (re)Install
will restore the crapped out WinME functionality.
That will have to wait until the right time.

How do I receive points for answering this question?
Anyone have any ideas?

AEN007, you didn't get many replies because there were side discussions among the regulars on what IPX/SPX is and binding to adapters?

If someone had answered the question, you should be able to grant them the "right answer" and thus the points, but you might not be able to grant them to yourself in the situation of answering the question yourself.

Hi AEN. Unfortunately, no, you do not get points for answering a question within a Discussion you created. The point system is merely an incentive for people to provide the best information in the most effective way possible. I concur with RGreen, and as I expressed to you initially, the regulars within this forum really had no idea as to what IPX/SPX referred or how they related to a reinstallation of Windows ME.

It is a rarity that a question is posed within this forum that not only doesn't get resolved but doesn't even get responses. What we can say is thank you for posting the links so that others may learn from what you found. I guess your grunt work will pay off for someone else. Tis the forum way. :D

Hi Techie. Yeah, to be honest, the only thing I could think of was that AEN meant the connections from the motherboard to the case, and obviously that was not right. :D

We have so many regulars in here who share so much information, I highly doubt anything like this will happen for a while. I have been a member of this forum since February 2007 and I do not expect to see something like this again for a long time.

I knew that IPX/etc was a networking protocol issue, but I just did not have an idea on how to solve his/her problem.

I don't feel too bad about being stumped by this one then, since it stumped all of you too. It was over my head - about 6 feet over - after all as I point out, I am a simple number bunny (Accountant) who dabbles in PC's and has a fair knowledge of how they go together. We definitely need AEN to stick around if for no other reason than to explain some of this to us occasionally and raise all of our knowledge, individually and collectively.

As I have said, I have used PC's since that was a trade mark and the generic term was Micro Computers, and I have learned more in the last two years on this community than I ever thought I would. Probably more about the Intel 82801 chip and AHCI than I ever wanted to know, but that's how it is sometimes.
