So far off. AMD should have not said anything and speed up development and surprise Intel.
By 2010 Itel could be running 18 cores.

Are these multiple cores just a big delay until another big leap in computing comes? I realize the benefits in multitasking and multiple programs and things going on at one time, but what about higher performance for a single task? Are these multiple cores becoming like how many blades we can put on one razor?

Multi-core, shmulti-core.
Intel has already built an 80-core prototype (back in 2006, I believe) running at 3.xGHz per core.

The Cell processor from Sony/Toshiba/IBM has 8 cores and is in the PS3. Toshiba is going to be using it in other consumer devices as well.

So far, the use of multi-core CPUs requires that software be multi-threaded and optimized to take advantage of additional cores, otherwise they merely exist and contribute little to performance otherwise. Only now are we actually starting to see their utilization beginning to happen.

Let's not forget that most people are still using a 32-bit OS. 64-bit exists, but like multi-core CPU technology, there's not really a lot of things coded to take advantage of it (but it is indeed faster).

Until the next "big leap in computing" comes along, these two things will have to fill our current need for speed.

Funny thing about AMD's 12-core CPU -- it's being built using the same method for which they criticized Intel. PKB

Yawn. What makes AMD think that 12 cores is going to really help them if we aren't even taking full advantage of dual core processing today? By the time 2010 rolls around, they'll probably be just getting to coding for quadcores. If their inferior products today don't hold a candle to today's cores, all you'll endup with is 12 inferior cores. AMD had their moment and lost it to Intel. While I know they have to constantly improve their stuff, perhaps they should really focus on the duals and quads. Thats why they keep losing money, not getting the duals and quads up to snuff today.

OK everyone open your eyes and read these chips are aimed at the servers and will reduce power consumption at the same time as offering more performance
AMD is gaining in sales to manufactures of servers and this is were all of AMD's gains have come from they still need something better for us average (home ) users and i think they will surprise us here sometime( hopefully soon real soon)(Yes intel has lost quite a bit of sale to the servers but have gain in the sales to desktop manufactures)
