600 Bucks: So Much Money, So Little Time

My wife and I will be getting $1200 and are expecting our first child this July. Since my wife is a teacher she will be out of work for the summer, plus some additional weeks at the beginning of the school year, that money is going straight to our savings account and will be used to help pay for bills while she's out of work.
If I were to use the money...I'd use it to get a Hard Drive Camcorder. Oh well!

PC World makes me a bit sick. How about a responsible article to help the consumer? We were going to save ours for a rainy day, but after catching up on the electric/gas bill, paying phone bill, buying insulin, and purchasing a tank of gas to get to work we realized it was already pretty cloudy outside!

No, spend it locally. This article is wrong-headed and selfish. Buying these product sends the money to Asia and big corporations, so zero stimulus. The point is to stimulate the US economy, buying these products send US federal money directly offshore. Instead, hire someone locally to work on your house or fix up your car, go out to dinner at a local restaurant, leave big tips all year, throw a party at a local pub, buy artwork from a local artist, go to concerts with local musicians; anything, but spend the money in your community at the smallest business you can find. Every leader should be shouting: spend it locally! Other ideas anyone?

Sears has a Home Arcade system-- a stand-up arcade game with 50 atari-type arcade games, on sale for $600, wouldn't you know it! These things usually go for well over a grand, so it's a steal. I couldn't resist, especially with that check coming in for the same amount! I'll probably mod it with a PC to run MAME games-- it's usually twice that much just for the cabinet & controls, much less the screen, speakers, etc.

@bstrayman: PCW has LOTS of responsible articles out there to help the consumer--And we love doing them--But you know, it's nice to digress every now and then and do something fun. Sorry times are tough for you right now, cheers to better days.
@Ccelsius: You're right, the money is to help stimulate local economy. But that gets done in different ways--you can still go to Best Buy and purchase some tech gear and the taxes you pay will go towards local and federal economy. However, it doesn't have the same effect as spending the money at a local mom and pop shop or local restaurant, so I hear what you're saying. Just the same, I wonder how many people out there will actually use their $600 for what it was intended for. I mean, how many people do you think will just piss it away on something dumb?
