No, spend it locally. This article is wrong-headed and selfish. Buying these product sends the money to Asia and big corporations, so zero stimulus. The point is to stimulate the US economy, buying these products send US federal money directly offshore. Instead, hire someone locally to work on your house or fix up your car, go out to dinner at a local restaurant, leave big tips all year, throw a party at a local pub, buy artwork from a local artist, go to concerts with local musicians; anything, but spend the money in your community at the smallest business you can find. Every leader should be shouting: spend it locally! Other ideas anyone?

Might I direct your attention to Exhibit A (from my entry):

The way I see it, I have two choices: Squirrel away my hush money until the dollar is actually worth more than kindling, or just let my newfound greenbacks "trickle down" to Bay Area bartenders.

Local business for the win! (Still, though, I think it's kosher to drop a couple bucks on some sweet bit of kit, reguardless of port of origin).

:^0 It went to rent, the cable, a muffler and power steering line, as well as some cash to my bro.'s who helped me out. So what real "stimulus" did I do?????????? Well, I got my car repaired, my bills are current, and a few bro.'s got some bucks. What real help????? It's all very local, a parts store got the $ for the parts, a few bro.'s got some cash, and I'm right back to the current state of things.
Yes, I'm current, the ride is repaired , and I still have a "few" dollars left. Meh.

Going to let my boys buy the beer, and whip them in a few pool games, B-)

Aside to coastie, don't tell me you didn't e-file :0

If I was living in my fantasy world: I'd be buying the new 3g iPhone the first chance I got.

The real world: It's going in the savings account for an anticipated car purchase within the next year.

Gadler: That was exactly what I was going to do. I'm looking at last year's models and I can't believe how some places are really cutting down their prices to make room for the new models.

In regards to the Xbox/Playstation thing...I have to agree with you that the PSIII does top the Xbox in graphics. They just seem much more crisper and richer then the Xbox. And you can't beat the Blu-ray thing. Maybe when Xbox and Sony finalize that deal in getting those Blu-ray drives in the 360 then maybe I'll trade mine in for a new one.

@oparada1120: If you're looking for last years model, I'd recomend the Panasonic HDC-SD1. It's not hard drive based, rather it takes SD cards. But with the cost of memory being so inexpensive, I think it's the way to go. Both us here at PCWorld and Macworld love the camera. If you hunt hard enough, you can find it for about $800--a steal seeing as it was $1500 a year ago. Happy hunting finding a new camera and good luck with the new baby. B-)

Does anyone else object to the federal government's just handing out taxpayers' money?

They do it all the time to multi-billion dollar corporations (it's nicknamed corporate welfare), so it's nice that "We, The People" get a turn, even if it is only a one time deal, and it isn't quite as much as McDonalds gets from the government for their advertising campaigns. I for one am not complaining. It helped pay down some of my bills.

I would much rather that they don't give any welfare to anyone and spend it on something worthwhile such as the national debt.

Had we elected a worth-while president whose cabinet didn't consist of crooks for the last eight years our national debt wouldn't be astronomical. So I don't want to hear about it. Mine went directly to bills. Thanks to our current administration I can barely afford to put gas in my car and drive to work every day.
I certainly don't think that both my wife and I need to work 60 hours a week and barely get by as it is. Buy hey, why not right? The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. At least that's been the case for about the last eight years. Oh well. Have fun with your new toys, well those of you that can afford to spend it on something other then bills.

It's also due to the Federal Reserve's printing all that "money" and devaluating the buying power of your dollar. Printing more dollars only benefits those who get it first.

C'mon, do the math and open your eyes folks. If gas goes up just 50 cents this year (it'll be more than that) and you use just 15 gallons a week for everything:
.50 x 15 x 52 = $390.00.
Now tell me: Where do you really think your tax rebate (and everyone else's) is going to be spent? From there, well, just follow the money to see who besides the oil countries and companies are really getting the rebate check. It's just a handfull of people raking in tons of money.

Same thing happened during the first term: You got a tax rebate and it all went straight into rising gas prices the same year. It's called "wealth transfer" (from the masses to the few). It's an age old Republican tried & true method to get money out of the Treasury and into the hands of the wealthy few. Read "The Robber Barons".

You're preaching to the choir.
