The 100 Best Products of 2008

I think you're jumping the gun here. It's not even halfway through 08 and we're already showing the best products?
There is one problem I have. Some of this stuff isn't out yet. Example: Firefox 3 just released as RC1. Final doesn't come out until June. Right now it's great but who's to say that in 3 months it could go south?
I agree on some of the items, but I still think this article is at least 4 months too early.

I don't know how "American" this site is, but HULU??? Its only available for the US!!! How about the other 6 billion people in the world. I haven't read further but already this is a VERY bad list.
If you haven't read further than the first item on the list, you have no right to call the list bad. I haven't even heard of Hulu until now, but at least I read beyond the first page.

I completely agree. I know PC World is entitled to their own opinion, but I don't think beta products should be included on the list. That said, I am very much looking forward to Firefox 3, since I hear nothing but good things about it. My favorite part of the list is that the Wii is listed exactly one space higher than OSX 10.5.

We are an American-based computer and technology publication. Therefore, our list is US-centric. It's not that we are unaware of or insensitive to the needs of people in other countries, it's just that the majority of our readers are American. I'm sorry that our #1 pick wasn't useful for you.

Hi geekazine --
We traditionally do our list mid-year, for a fairly unusual and arcane reason. PC World used to have a tradeshow in June, and the World Class Awards (now known as the 100 Best Products) were given out at that show. Although we no longer do the tradeshow, we still give out our awards at the same time. In fact, internally, several people still call them the "World Class Awards", even though that's not what we publish them as anymore.
I hope that helps clear things up for you!

I know about the WCA. Still, a best 100 of 08 is a bit much. It's like you want to be the first out the gate. Best before mid-08 is more like it.
To clarify: I understand any "Best of" list will always get opinions. That shouldn't be the best or that wasn't even on the list. This is not what I am pointing out.
I looked at the past Best 100s and the lists are still questionable. I
really think someone should make the decision to either hold off on
this list or have someone scrutinize it a little better.

How about saying which products the readers voted for and which the editors voted for? I doubt many readers of PC mag would vote for the Apple Air Book - heck even Apple users don't like the thing.
Bogus article - bring back journalistic inegrity !!! or at least intelligence

Perhaps you missed the links in the middle of the first page. Everything on the list of 100 was nominated, voted on, and ranked by PC World editors. We took the top user voted product in each category, and showed them off here. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,146165/article.html
IIRC, reader votes are also highlighted in the print issue as well.

Looks like there's some confusion here about our Best Products of 2008 story. As the editor of the story, let me explain a couple of things:
First, our list isn't meant to be a ranking of the best products released during 2008 -- if it were, we would wait until the end of the year to do it, obviously. I can see how the title of the feature could have suggested otherwise.
The story is a ranking of the tech products that have done the most good for the most people since we did this ranking 12 months ago. The products that were the most fun, offered the most productivity gain, or the ones that made everyday stuff easier. People across America have been digging on the utility of their iPhones during the last year, so it made the list. Some people stayed in better contact with friends using Facebook. It makes the list. Hulu simply works, and is a harbinger of what TV will be like in the future. It makes the list. And so on.
Anyway, I hope this helps and thanks for reading. -Mark

Just a couple of observations...
First. It is May (or maybe June) folks. That means that this article was started in Feb or Mar. How in the name of heck can you purport to claim "The 100 Best Products of 2008" when the year is barely begun?
Second. Best product of the year... sure if you live in the US.
