Hi dolm and welcome to the PCWorld Communities. :D
I can only speak for myself but I would have to disagree strongly about the quoted statement. As referenced within this Discussion, low-end computers are best bought from the manufacturer. However, that is not always the case. There was a recent Discussion within this Community that spent upwards of 10 pages on how to build the best $500 computer possible.
Conversely, high-end custom built computers are generally less expensive than if one would have bought the same or comparable computer retail. Without knowing the background of your search or the end result, I can only presume that the reason you spent some much more was because of lack of research.
The things that you referenced that brought your computer price higher than a retail computer can be addressed this way:
- The better security applications, for the most part, are free. This Community is all about sharing insights on which free security applications work best and which can be avoided. Whatever security applications you have installed could probably be replaced with a better free application
- Depending on the monitor you choose, further research could have produced a lower price. I believe anything lower than a 20" monitor can be found just about anywhere. Online retail stores such as newegg.com normally have the best bang for your buck.
- The applications that you use really cannot be included. The majority of retail computers do not come with fully licensed versions of any application. You may get trial versions of major applications or paid versions of lesser applications but, for the most part, the applications one gets within a retail computer can be classified as "bloatware" and is normally removed by the end-user anyway.
