Questions before I turn in my Verizon Palm 700p:
1. Will new iPhone open Office files?
2. open PDFs?
3. forward email attachments and save?
4. send photos taken?
5. make videos?
6. work as a modem wired or bluetooth now or with Apps?
be as business friendly as Palm OS or Win OS?

I won't buy an iPhone until it's available from Sprint. AT&T was unable to keep my phone service on at my house for more than a few days at a time and forced me to pay a $100 early termination fee before I could get reliable service elsewhere. On the other hand, I've had Sprint on my cell phone for seven years, and they go out of their way to accommodate me, always giving me the benefit of the doubt when ever there is a problem.
Let me choose my carrier.

This article SUCKS!!! Does this guy read any news? Just today TomTom anounced that they have a native iPhone app up and running and presumably on the way soon. And give me a break, there is no way that in any near future will Apple be able to fit a 64GB into the iPhone. Especially in it's current form. OH, and by the way, 32MB is really not a size of an iPhone.

Additional questions:
9. Where's instant messaging via an iChat-like program, or is that for third-party developers to sort out?
10. What about a front-mounted camera for 3G video calls and video chat?

#9 for me: Flash??? When will Flash capability be available on our iPhones' browser. So many websites use Flash so heavily - it's probably my main complaint (iLove m'iPhone otherwise).

Hmm, the IPhone looks nice and all but I'm still not ready to trade my BlackBerry 8320 Curve for it, not just yet. the Modem feature is a MUST have. Since the BlackBerry now has turn by turn Nav and it functions as a High Speed modem, I just cant trade it yet.

32GB and 64GB iphones? i still dont understand why people need so much space on their mobile devices. yeah sure you have thousands of songs but are you going to listen to every single one on the road? And if you are going to be putting movies on there too then maybe you shouldn't be on the road. stop complaining about more memory and let them focus on applications and more features. 16GB is more then enough to put your favorite songs/music videos/documents for a mobile device.

It is better to wait for the next iPhone hopefully with 32Mb or 64MB memory for my MP3 music. I also wanted a 5MP camera and stereo FM tuner with the iPhone.
There will then be no need for me to lug in my iPod, cellphone and digital camera.
Maybe the Nokia N95 or the new N96 would be a better choice right now.

Rumor has it that Tom Tom already has an SDK app for turn-by-turn voice, ready for download.

With regards to question #1 about the plastic back, one columnist at http://www.smartdevi...com/article/The iPhone 3G Finally Drops/228426_1.aspx wrote that it's for heat dissipation.

Oops! Reference to "32MB" iPhone was a typo...now corrected. (At least I didn't say 32KB!) Thanks!

I'm considering the iPhone to replace my 700p as well. Your questions are spot on. I can answer a few but appreciate the others as well.

1 - Yes it will open office files in view only mode.

2- AT&T says yes on PDF's - I am not so sure I believe them.

3- No changes to eMail were announced - so I am not sure the attachment issues is fixed yet - but if they want to be a business phone well then - the forwarding of attachments MUST be fixed for it to be considered as a corporate platform. One other thing - I understand there are a few companies using the SDK to write real eMail applications. As you recall with Palm, thats were we got the better eMail clients - 3rd parties.

4- They show Photo posting - not sending as attachments (see #3 above) so unlikely until eMail is fixed.

5- No news on videos either. I believe until they get a faster processor, so apple can produce a quality movie, it is unlikely to see on this iPhone. My Treo movies are laughable, poor quality audio and video blurs. No thanks.

6- The Modem thing is an AT&T thing. It can and has been done on the iPhone. AT&T seems to have the same issue Verizon did a couple years ago about this. My bet is a third party (or, even worse, Pirate only) app will be the only choice for this.

I believe the iPhone is getting closer to business friendly and the user interface is better than my Treo. And truely, the only thing I "multi-task" on my Treo is music while doing anything else (except a call). I believe the iPhone can do this too. Since the eMail push happens inthe background, then this is all the multi-tasking I personally would need.

What's else is missing?

A2DP - blue tooth stereo profile. It's a music player for goodness sake! Can a third party fix this? I bought one for my Treo - but it failed about every 15 minutes and required a reboot to get it working again.

Multiple IM support - but third parties can fix that.

Google integration - MobileMe looked impressive, but Google seems to offer everything Apple offers in MobileMe - and it is free.

So, again, great points all. I wish we could get beyond all these issues.

He said there was a 32GB Ipod touch, which there is, and speculated about a 32GB iphone. Calm down man.

The Apple 3GS is a solid device capable of handling most any business application when on the road. A must have gadget.
