No thanks. I will stick with HD cable on my 48" widescreen HDTV with Dolby Digital surround sound, and of course the comfort of the couch. I would have to spend a lot of money to have a PC system that comes close to the performance of my home theater. I have never seen a PC equal to my home theater, and I don't think I will see one anytime soon. I don't care to blog either. Too bad you missed some great Lost episodes. I agree with you on the CSI and medical shows though. Don't forget HD sports that you won't see on your PC either.

I agree...Lost was rather good this season. Of course, it helped that they finally started answering some big questions (but still replaced them with more questions, however)!

No, I don't think I'll ever get rid of cable. I'm addicted to the high speed internet it brings me so the digital TV services are just a plus for me. Some shows are just drivel, crappy fare for the couch potato. I need to be challenged and the History channel or Discovery provides the stimulus I need to keep my thought processes sharp and my mind ever expanding. I do enjoy the original CSI as they provide a thought provoking experience. House tickles the funny bone while testing the diagnostic skills. Many movies today are of the doom and gloom genre and do little to induce any thought or experience except the desire to run and hide in a closet. I have a very fast and efficient desktop and build a new one every six months or so with the latest and greatest hardware available, however I have no desire to watch TV shows on my 22 inch widescreen display. Video editing is as far as I care to go and it is only my own productions that ever get burned to DVD's. Transcribing media from tape and film to DVD is only out of neccesity to preserve aging media into digital formats that will be everlasting. A fifty inch LCD display with sourround sound makes sports a delight as it provides a true experience with views and content not available at the real event. Should the prices ever reach the unbearable point, I might consider going back to the broadcast fare but I don't see that happening. With the cost of transportation rising regardless of the choice of pollution free vehicle or mass transit, the need to work from home and provision of neccesary information within the home will drive these media lower in price and become more prolific.

I connected my pc to my 42" TV long ago and I watch less cable content all the time. The author is right, there's a lot more content out there than the limited choices offered by the local cable monopoly. Not only that, but games look and sound awesome using the TV and the surround sound speakers.

I totally agree with the article. Not only can you use these recommended services you may also log on to the cable networks sites and even order hd pay-per view a whole plethora of services. Thank goodness I can now tell Comcast to come retrieve their clunky grey latency-ridden cable box.

I just can't get into watching TV on my PC, or the thought of setting up an HTPC. Individual home theater components, an HDTV, and Directv do me just fine when it comes to watching TV and videos. I do rip DVDs that I OWN to my HDD for archive purposes mostly, but will occasionally watch them on the PC. That's about the extent of it.

If you're going to tout the advantages of "web TV", you probably shouldn't start your article by trashing some of the most popular shows on regular TV.
So, let's see if I have this right, you're recommending giving up "Lost" for Snoop Dog videos, paintball coverage, and half-baked video software? Uh... yeah.
Do you seriously think anybody going's to drop Dish Network for Joost? Wake up and smell the RF, dude.

seems I touched a nerve. who knew that dissing cable and satellite would make people so cranky?

first: lost was great the first season and has sucked hard ever since. sorry, just my opinion. and grey's anatomy has always sucked.

second: who said anything about sitting in front of a PC? I connect a laptop to my projector, watch 100 inch video on my wall.

finally: I never actually said I abandoned cable/satellite for webcasters, only that there are now reasons to do so. (I also said some were not ready for prime time, and they aren't -- but they might be one day.) mostly we watch DVDs on the big screen (including tv episodes -- higher res, no commercials) and netflix watch now using the roku (which rocks, by the way).

We have to use satellite for internet and have a 1GB limit per week. That is maybe 1 or 2 videos and a program update. Then done for the week. So I guess I am stuck with Dish Network.

Hmmmn, First OFF, My PC is completely SEPARATE from my "Entertainment", it is a "TOOL", meant for WORK, granted, I do get some. okay A LOT of fun outta it, BUT
