"Last OS Standing?" Last day "a readily available consumer operating system"? Robert, you've been living under a rock lately? Remember Linux? It's an OS and it's readily available. What are you thinking?

Honestly, esurigao, I appreciate and agree with your point. I, myself, run Linux on two of my daily driver machines. But what can I say: It's a catchy headline, and for the vast majority of users over the next couple of years (only a precious few of whom will even consider trying Linux), it's a poignant one. But nevertheless, I accept your valid criticism.

Cheers,
Robert

I am using vista 64 bit. I haven't had any issues. Would recommend vista 64 over 32 bit and get it oem too. As for me i have no reason to keep xp but i must say that xp has served me well. The only hardware that is not compatible with vista is my scanner. But its going to get replaced anyways due to its starting to fritz on me but still works yet. For the meantime I just install xp on vmware so i can use my scanner. See Problem solved. Think people, overall everything works including all my pc games even the oldest titles. Yet about that what i find ironic is that under xp certain old games won't run properly but yet under vista 64 those problems went away lol. Its best to not figure out way and just let it be.

Please, everybody, chill and calm down.
If you don't like Windows Vista, then why bother posting?
Enough about bashing Windows Vista. Use an operating system that you have and stick with it.

Sorry, I'm not a moderator, but I just kept reading about bashing Windows all the time...

Vista works quite well for me with minimal tweaking. I've left it alone, except for the following programs that I've added for security and maintenance.
(1) AVG for anti-virus. Light on resources, very stable and is non-intrusive. Zero viruses so far. Way better than Symantec and McAffee.
(2) Opera for browsing. Lightweight, secure and feature-rich browser. Blows IE7 out of the water. I prefer it to FF too.
(3) Diskeeper 2008 pro. The best defragmenter around, and work nicely on Vista with it's VSS defrag mode. Keeps the drives in top shape, and since Vista accesses the drives ever so often, it helps to keep the drives in peak performance.

That's all. My laptop runs very smoothly, and I've not even disabled indexing or superfetch.

Dont worry about bashers friend. There will always be more bashers than supporters for anything. You know why , coz bashing is the easiest thing to do. Those who have been using vista since longhorn days know how much power the OS has in itself and they use it happily. :)
Vista rocks .

I say if Microsoft does not want to support XP or any of its other software than why should we as consumers support Microsoft with any of our hard earned money! I guess its time to get ride of my 3 computers with Windows systems and take a bite into APPLE

I don't care if Vista is better or worse. As long it is working fine, then I have no problem

Except that your stuck with apple hardware which is proprietary. So either way you get screwed. As far as software goes thats ok But when it comes to hardware like the way apple does it. Thats where i draw the line. At least closed software on a open platform makes software not so closed after all lol. I love to overclock my system. Try doing that with an apple lol

Doodz,

You are so right! Everyone loves a parade. Sadly, the bashers revel in it.

What you are seeing now is push-back from seasoned IT professionals who've grown weary of the slack-jawed followers.

You are operating under a mistaken assumption. Microsoft is no longer selling XP in the retail marketplace, and still continues to allow OEM manufacturers install it for a while. They will continue to offer first level support thorough security and optional updates for the next 5 years and extended support through security updates for the next 4 years. That means XP will have some level of support for some 16 years, longer than any other OS in their or possibly anyone else's history. In comparisson, Windows 2000 received some level of support for 9 years, Windows 98 for 9 years.

I am a subscriber to PC World & when my subscription runs out this year I will cancel, because of the constant badgering of windows vista, if I had listen to most of your comments I would not be enjoying 3 computers with windows vista today, by the way, I do use Mac PC too, Presently own a mac book pro & a G5.
I thing the writers @ PCWorld should start giving there subscribers none partial opinions.

Everything in life has its Pros & Cons. How can A company be foolish yet leads the Pac.

Hi Papaduke,

It's nice to hear from the more enlightened among us!

Don't despair, though, I think sanity will prevail. As I informed raife1: Windows Vista is getting traction in the marketplace.

I'm running Vista Ultimate on three Pcs, and think it rocks!

I am running everything on windows vista 64 bit period. All my applications and games that were once on xp works flawlessly on vista so no need to keep xp. However i will keep xp on a virtual machine for troubleshooting purposes for those that still or don't want to upgrade from xp to vista. But as far as keeping xp as a dual boot. No need for that anymore. And the fact that i jumped from 32bit to 64bit is a big major upgrade. XP64 is a joke and its broken. Vista 64 is the way to go for general and most importantly of all is pc gaming =)

MarioJP, I think there are a lot of us who have considered going 64bit, but have not because of the possibility of applications that would not function and drivers that may not be available. Would you consider writing a document telling of your 64bit experience. We know that is the future and we might as well get with it. I have the OEM version on three machines, one self built, one an HP laptop and an HP Media Center that received the free upgrade last May.

I fully expected to hate Vista after all the hype, but I installed a new HD and installed the upgrade. I had removed the original drive with XP MCE incase I didn't like Vista, but it never went back in and last month was formatted to use for another machine. I fell for the anti-XP hype in 2001-2, and it's the same thing, except the internet now let's them spread it further and faster.

On my selft built machine it's a multi-boot and once a month I boot into XP whether I need to or not just to update the AV and OS. Then I shut it down and go back to Vista. When I use XP it's like I'm running at half power because non of the tools I'm accustomed to are there.
