I walked by the forming queue today in the Harijuku district. Indeed the faithful are queuing up and settling in for at least 2 overnight stays on the street. This is a very busy, tree lined boulevard (Ometesando Street) in Tokyo that hoses toni shops like Chanel and Gucci, along with Softbank, selling hundreds of different cellphone models. It is a little bit like a cartoon scene even on a normal day with "hawkers" standing in the doorways of some of the shops, promoting the items that that the shop wants to emphasize.
The iPhone needs no such promotion as the people lining up on the street call enough attention to the coming sale of iPhone 3G in Tokyo on Friday.
I have a short video of the scene on the sidewalk that I'll post on Utube later today (look for iPhone Tokyo)
