No applause necessary,

One of the great advantages of being a small business is that 7 days a week you are never far from work. I ftp my work back home with me where I can continue analysis and research. Although I do sense your sarcasm and disbelief in my figures, I can offer you this, If anytime you come through our little town of Houston, look us up Aurora Geomatics and we will welcome you to inspect our GIS Lab, as long as you don't carry a heavy static charge at least :)

I also believe that your retort is pretty classic, since the very fact that I and many of the people in our Lab actually do use Vista at home. I am probably the biggest exception as I recenltly run 5 different operating systems at home, as it is my job to keep constantly up to date on computer systems/OS that result in the highest productivity for our Lab. For some of our GIS technicians that means running their favourite flavour of Linux distro for using their OpenSource applications, for the users of ArcGIS it means running XP sp3.

So while Vista may infact be good in some scenarious, it certainly comes up short in others. Perhaps Vista only works good with other Vista clients, in which case we would have to completely revamp our structure, and that would also mean licensing Windows Server 2008, which we did trail run a month ago, and found our current UNIX server to still be the speediest, stable, flexible, GIS server system we have deployed yet to date.

So while I am using Vista at work, and newly testing OpenSolaris, I will enjoy Vista at home (along with all the other OS's I run), as will my wife continue to enjoy her iMac at home.

I understand that in certain cases Vista will be the best OS to deploy for various reasons. I feel though that most of the time the OS of choice is decided more upon a personal feeling than it is based upon true scientific analysis, regardless of the OS.

I assure you there are many very very bright minds around the world that use every flavour of OS imaginable, and each have their own good reasons.

For other people, such as yourself, there will only ever be one choice, and that choice will always be the best choice for them.

Lawrence I ran my Vista laptop for over a month without an anti-virus and to my surprise when I reloaded my anti -virus there were no viruses detected so I ran an online virus scanner still nothing I believe that by being careful and embracing the UAC instead of shutting it of like some people do I can be just as safe as a Mac user online. Also the only Anti-spyware software I used during my little Experiment was Windows Defender. My anti-spyware software agreed with Defender no spyware . I would never recommend not using an anti-virus for everyone but I think more advanced users could probably get away with it . :)

Wow, what's with all the thumbs down? Would all the naysaying bandwagoners please stand up and at least post why you would give the article a thumbs-down--without trying to repeat in a monkeylike fashion the words of some other overhyped media about mythical Vista problems?
