I disagree that attitudes have changed all that much. Leaving a laptop unencrypted today or using a system with inadequate security is akin to leaving the bank and vault unlocked in the days of Jesse James. If the bank was unlocked the banker would have been strung up. Certainly the courts have changed... Law suits today are common; in those days of the wild west you were just strung up.
