I'm really beginning to think that MS thinks that consumers can be led around like a herd of cattle. They make a patch and then two weeks later make a patch for that patch. I have gotten to the point where I just update my anti-virus and protection programs. I Update my drivers via third party software. I just try staying away from their patches any more. The last time I downloaded a patch it screwed up my mail service Internet connection and killed my external drive. Fortunately I was able to bring everything back to normal.
I let MS put out their patches and then wait for the crap to hit the fan. SP3 yea right.

I bought a new Acer Aspire with Vista. It's very attractive but gobbles up, not only power but hard drive space as well...a lot.
I've gone back to Xp but it is a hassle as the Acer site only supports drivers for Vista. I had to play around with other driver sets from models that supported Xp. I was so disappointed with Acer that they were not helpful at all.
Xp really works well.

The only thing that a OS should do is OPERATE the machine and enable the programs I want to run to do so.
I DO NOT want it to be a database, a paint program, a email program, a whatever the hell else they think I should be doing with MY computer.
The very concept of cloud computing is only for folks that live in NY, SF, Chicago, etc. I spend about 3 months of the year out photographing in places that sometimes takes 2 days to get to a place with dial up. to have my OS and applications setting on the internet would make my computer worthless. Good thing I did not trade in my film cameras as I may have to go back to those days.
Vista is not for me nor for my parents who live at the long end of an ancient phone line. Guess it's time to start talking to my congresscritters about making microsoft foot the bill to have internet towers on every mountain in the west just like the government made them do with phone lines.

Just for a more positive view, I am completely delighted with my Vista Ultimate. I have installed SP1 but was very happy with it before this. I specified 4GB RAM for the computer I bought at the same time that Vista was first released, and it has worked perfectly since. For the record I have also installed IE8 Beta 1 and will install Beta 2 as soon as it is available. I do have a 12mbps Comcast email connection and it works quite well. If they ever upgrade to opics, though, I'd probably give it a try. Also, I've been very happy with Windows Live OneCare v.2 and Outlook/Word 2007 with never any any infections. New stuff is fun if you have the right equipment but one thing I can say is stay away from Cyberlink, though I talked with them at least twice a week for several months I never got any video. Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray works really well however.
