Users who are really concerned about a popup message should close the window from the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

Or some may feel compelled to take more drastic action. "Sometimes the safest thing to do is to kill the entire browser," Howes said.

I've had popups that were so persistent that the browser wouldn't close from the taskbar. I usually have to give the three finger salute, go to Processes, and kill the browser there.

However, I came across one that was so bad that even that didn't work. I tried to shut down the computer, and was stymied there as well. My only recourse was to physically pull the computer's power cord. (It was easier to reach than the power switch on the back of the computer).

I've seen that codec thing and seeing as how I didn't think I needed any codec, I passed. Somehow though I ended up withthe Trojan downloader Zlob and something that Hijacked my wallpaper of all things. There were some others as well. To say I was irritated is an understatement. The site was legitimate, but had been Hijacked. Normally I am not plagued by pop ups of any kind. coastie65

That's right, it is. UAC is training people to click OK without even reading the contents of the warning. So much for the concept of increased security.
